No one yet mentioned HIVE - higher institute for villianous education. Series about a school for wannabe Blofelds and Scaramangers.

GONE series by Michael Grant already mentioned is excellent

Charlie Bone by Jenny Nimmo series is brilliant, as is the The Wind Singer by William Nicholson.

Young Sherlock Holmes are good, as are young Bond.

My 12yo boy likes anything by Rick Riordan - author of Percy Jackson books- he has a few different series on the go-they don't all feature Percy Jackson.

Diary of a Wimpy Kid series.

The Hunger games he devoured in a few days recently.

He also asked me to buy an Antony Horowitz (can't remember which)as they were reading it in English earlier this year, but it was going to slow for him and he wanted to read the whole book in a shorter time.

My son is science mad and liked Simon Mayos (yes the DJ) debut book Itch.

I find it very hit and miss though with what he likes. He's not been interested in the Lemony Snicket books nor Artemis Fowl.

Ds liked Catcher in the Rye which is about a 12 yr old boy.
    Also Charlie Higson's zombie books,
the Gone series by Michael Grant,
The knife of never letting go by Patrick Ness,
Cell by Stephen King, but not his other stuff so much,
    David Almond,
    Bloodtide by Melvyn Burgess.

I second Catcher in the Rye apart from the fact that Holden is 17 not 12.

Also, To Kill a Mockingbird and Lord of the Flies.
  • When I was at school we read Goodnight Mister Tom and Carrie's War. Those were and still are my favourite books.
  • Not sure about Catcher in the Rye - I do think you need to be an adolescent to read it and a 12 year old will miss loads. What about some detective stories? I was reading Sherlock Holmes at that age - the short stories are very accessible.
Would he like sci fi rather than fantasy? Lots of boys do. The library is bound to have a section for it.

If he doesn't like Harry Potter, do we assume he is not into fantasy?

A quite lovely though a little dated book for teens, is a book by Catherine Cookson called Joe and the Gladiator. Its a 'pony' story, but the hero is a teenage boy from a working class background. Its got lots of social history for conversation too, its not the standarad catherine cookson fodder.

If he has only read shorter books and tou are trying to 'encourage better rading' rather than just catch an interest, what about some Short stories by 'classic' writers, like Oscar Wilde. (dorian grey is the first in most such collations). Lots of classic literature is available on various free sites for reading on lipne or download. I found some LM montgomery which i love, but might be too 'girly' for a boy?

Not catcher in the rye, far too dark for a 12 year old.

I agree with the Hunger games, skullduggery pleasant and if he hasn't read them yet he is not too old for Michael Murpurgo. Yes to Terry Pratchett, Conn Iggulden books are great, the Ghenghis Khan Series and the Rome Series.
