Would just like to add Phillip Pullman's "His Dark Materials" series- Northern Lights, The Subtle Knife etc. Really good books
Oh yes, another vote for these, the Subtle Knife is my favourite of the 3.
Other suggestions would be...
The Alex Rider books
Mortal Engines series
Artemis Fowl series
Switchers
New Heroes Series - first book is the Quantum Prophecy
Power of five series - also by Antony Horowitz who wrote the Alex Rider books
EragonOver futile odds
And laughed at by the gods
And now the final frame
Love is a losing game0 -
The Belgariad series by David Eddings. DS favourite books and has read them almost to destruction. Also the Skulduggery Pleasant books are good.Truth always poses doubts & questions. Only lies are 100% believable, because they don't need to justify reality. - Carlos Ruiz Zafon, The Labyrinth of the Spirits0

My DS is reading the Skulduggery Pleasant books at the moment.0 -
Ds liked Catcher in the Rye which is about a 12 yr old boy.
Also Charlie Higson's zombie books,
the Gone series by Michael Grant,
The knife of never letting go by Patrick Ness,
Cell by Stephen King, but not his other stuff so much,
David Almond,
Bloodtide by Melvyn Burgess.0 -
My 12 yr old son LOVES the 'Gone' series by Michael Grant, and the Charlie Higson series too.
He has read the Hunger Games series, and has now started to read the books that i read, although i am not sure if i should be encouraging it, as i like thriller ones!0 -
Anything by John Christopher, Robert Cormier, Robert Westall.
In fact look in the Puffin Plus imprint will give you loads of great writers for teenagers - and not the Sweet Valley High type either.Member #14 of SKI-ers club
Words, words, they're all we have to go by!.
(Pity they are mangled by this autocorrect!)0 -
I loved point horror as a teenager, though I did move quickly on to Stephen king etc, which I think as a 13 year old were possibly a bit "old" for me - I'm sure my mum thought I was still reading fairly harmless teen horror!0

I read the Talisman by SK when I was 13 - I absolutely loved it, but looking back I was probably a bit young for it.
I'd second Terry Pratchett. I'm re-reading my vast collection of TP books at the moment and reminiscing about saving up with my pocket money to buy them from the local shop when I was a teenager (they are addictive).
I also started reading Robert Asprin's myth adventures at round age 12. They are comedy/fantasy, but you probably won't find them in the library (theY are on Amazon).0 -
If it turns out that he likes Terry Pratchett (and who wouldn't) then also try Robert Rankin and Tom Holt.
I can also second the Artemis Fowl books and the His Dark Materials trilogy.
I also liked Piers Anthony as a teenager, although there's a bit of sex in them. I remember the Apprentice Adept series being quite good.0
