  • I really enjoyed all the point books when I was about that age - particularly the point horror. They are also quite good gateway books into steven king territory.

You haven't said what his reading ability is - is it above / below /average for his age? Does he like longer books, or would he find that off-putting and he'd prefer something shorter?

I find libraries difficult to browse in but in our local Waterstones the assistants are very good and will recommend books for you.

Another option that hasn't been mentioned is the Pittacus Lore books (I am Number Four, The Power of Six and The Rise of Nine).

Thank you for your replies, my son is well above his reading level, he has just gone into year 8 and the teachers have asked him to start reading books more often than he does. I have just bought a kindle so I could download some on to that for him to read aswell, free ones would be good, in case he doesnt like them. He has only been reading short books at the moment.

  • 50 Shades of Grey. It's written like it's aimed at those with the same mental age as a 12-year old.

The Darren Shan books (e.g. cirque du freak) Creepy and gross and totally for children. Man character is a boy.

Martin Pig - by Kevin Brooks. For teenagers. (And probably all books by Kevin Brooks) Non fantasy.
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days attack me at once

I'm sure I was a naive 12 year old, but if I'd read that at 12 I would have been mentally scarred for life.
  • Might be a bit dated in some ways by now but at that age I loved Willard Price's Adventure series, learned quite a bit about animals that I'd never heard of previously, while enjoying some exciting stories. Actually, I don't even know if they're still in print, but they were certainly still available a few years ago.
