Either they think you'll leave soon, or they're discriminating you due to age and using that lame over qualified excuse. Try giving a reason like you now bought a dog and only want to work in a junior role so you can have more personal time off work.

ah but no one knows my age on my cv but of course I'd leave as soon as I had a better offer.
