i wondered are any of the originial posters still on MSE did u get your DLA or win your appeals? any advice most appreciatedWhen you know better you do better0 -

My health visitor advised me that I should apply for DLA. To be honest I was a little aprehensive about applying for this as I thought this was just for 'disabled' people. Then I heard of people claiming for children who has asthma and other people claiming as they have/had depression!! So I got the lovely 64 million page booklet and decided to fill this in myself (big mistake) I should of taken it to the local CAB and asked for some help.
When completing the form it asked of other professionals who would be able to verify (or something along them lines) his condition - I gave the name of the Child Psychologist and the Paeditrician who we have been seeing - of course they never asked these people, they went to my GP who never really had any dealings with son as I had been referred to Child Psychologist - the GP also states to contact Child Psy and Paeditrician - of course they didn't and case was turned down.
I then wrote to them asking them to contact the appropriate people in question. I then received notice that the case was now going to a tribunial with whom I had to let them know who was going to represent me - I HAVE NO IDEA!!!!! I sent the letter back saying that I would attend the hearing and bring someone with me (I told them I will have to confirm this with them)...I really just feel like giving up but I have come so far now and it just feels like a crusade I have to win and now think that my son is entitled too....
Anyone else here been sort of in the same pradicament as me or has heard of children with ADHD being awarded DLA????
Its very tough to claim DLA for children now with autism and adhd as some things are changing with regards to this, My son Thomas is 12 and has severe autism he is also non verbal and still in nappies requires bathing washing and dressing, he also sleeps very little, and believe it or not he was also nearly turned down for DLA until his GP did a report about him as they had requested Thomas now gets high rate care and high mobility until he is 16, you can appeal you can try and yes it stressful but if he is entitled he should be able to claim it as much as the next person:AAutism isn't the end of the world just a journey to another one:A0 -

I am sure you don't mean it to this way, but I do find your comment quite offensive. Though I do not claim DLA, I am pretty sure I would be eligible, for reason of both severe asthma and depression. Both conditions can have a massive effect on the life of a sufferer, and do fall under the legal definition of a disability.
Bit of a side issue I know but I also have Asthma, use to be chronic and luckily It has eased over the years, I can't for the life of me understand why we can't get free priscriptions.Asthma is life threatening, many die each year and yet people with mild diabetes are given them free.I have been self employed for 25 yrs and often told I should "go on the sick" but didn't ,feel its the least they could do is grant us priscription exempt..
I'm not trolling, just totally disgusted with a system thats clearly wrong.Yes we can buy an annual certificate by !!!!!! should we.......
Rant over and respect to a fellow sufferer..0 -

Yes asthma kills, it did kill my sister and yes the list of exempt conditions for perscription charges hasnt been touched for 40 years and it should be updated to reflect the world today.medicne today, I totally agree with you leveller.0 -
Sorry for bumping guys. Google brought me here.
I have just got off the phone to emergency out of hours social services, the person I spoke to was most helpful, I am really suffering with my DD, yet another outburst, nearly called the police, but instead DH left with DD2 and the dogs, and I stayed out in the garden, I just could not bare hearing her wrecking the house, Anyway cut a long story short the gentleman I spoke too told me that they can not just come out and take her to respite, he gave me some helpful advice, she is under caf and camhs, psychiatrist thinks she has ADHD and we have our second appointment for our questions to diagnose it early next month. Anyway the gentleman I spoke to from social services just now told me to contact the school Monday morning asking for a statement, he said she needs 25+ hours, AND to claim for DLA for her. ? I can understand the money will be very handy to support us in distracting her, and to use for replacement items she has broken. (So far this year, glass door panel, banister, £50 headphones, laptop, sofa, 2xdouble wardrobes, 4 doors, 2xdining room chairs, dining room table, bathroom sink, toilet seat, large mirror, chest of drawers, bathroom window, 2xbedroom carpets, bathroom lino, carpet on landing, amongst other things).
What would we need as evidence? And who can we go to for help to fill the form out? So far we have a youth worker from CAF we seen once, last week, I rung her this eve during outburst, she is coming again Wednesday next week, Psychiatrist, educational psychologist who we will be meeting next month, and the school are aware also. And ofcourse the GP who referred her to CAMHS..
Thanks in advance0 -

ADHD may not be life threatening but it can be severly disabaling for a child who cannot function in what society decides as "normal", I understand your frustration but not everyone who claims DVLA for asthma actually needs it,

I do However take exception To your intimation that because some Asthmatics get DLA your case is somehow a "fait a complait" It Is quite ridiculous to compare ADHD to a life threatening condition like Asthma.
DLA is awarded to enable people to live as normal a life as possible taking into account how their disability effects them and the personal care they need.
I have yet to learn of any fatalities caused by ADHD unless accommpanied by neglect.
Severe (Brittle) Asthma is a dreadfull and very often fatal condition.
It is well recognised by the medical profession.
100,000 deaths estimated yearly throughout the world [1,2]. Patients at greater risk for fatal asthma attacks are mainly those with severe, unstable disease, although death can occur to anyone if the asthma attack is intense enough [2,3,4].0
