My cat hates dogs, neighbours have new puppy...

We only moved to our house in December and don't know our next-door neighbours all that well yet - they've always been very friendly, but we don't bump into each other much, but today they suddenly have a new puppy! Only problem being, my cat (Clarence) really hates dogs and tries to attack them whenever he sees them.... we moved to this house because there were no dogs nearby that we knew of (I have moved from a house in the past that had a dogwalking path nearby, because it was so stressful). He's attacked massive boxers, german shepherds and dalmations, and chased a springer spaniel into our house and out again, and luckily the dogs have never gone for him, but he has also jumped on a puppy in the past, so now I'm really worried.... the neighbours never mentioned that they were thinking of getting a puppy, or I would have subtly mentioned that Clarence might not like it... so, it's the first day, and luckily I noticed the puppy playing in the garden before Clarence did. We have low plank fences between the gardens, with gaps in between the planks, and they've put that green chicken wire stuff along the bottom to stop the puppy running through, but that's not going to keep Clarence out... I followed him outside a minute ago to see how he'd react and he clocked the puppy and went to go straight over the fence, until I grabbed him. I said to the neighbours to watch out for him because he can't be trusted, and I said that I will keep an eye on him, but they didn't seem to take it too seriously. I said I'll keep him in for a bit so he's now shut inside with me, whining and wanting to get out.... I understand my cat is the one with the problem and I really don't want their puppy to get hurt, because he could do a lot of damage if he gets to him, but what can I do?! Am I being overly paranoid? Should I just hope that they don't leave the puppy unsupervised and leave them to it, or should I be doing something? I can't keep him in forever, but I can guarantee I'll be blamed if he does something while I'm not there.... Help!

You will neet to put a cat proof fencing to stop your cat attacking the puppy I am afraid...0

Unfortunately this is your problem and not your neighbour.
The puppy has every right to play in their own garden without being supervised all the time.0 -

Sorry... you probably did not mean it this way.. but why on earth you mentioning that your cat does not like dogs would make any difference to your neighbours getting one?0 -
Had a cat like that once, it jumped from a neighbours garage right onto her dog to attack it. The dogs leg was pulled out of it;s socket and it was badly frightened and scratched. I offered to pay for the treatment, (over £200 ) but they were insured thank god.
I told them to throw cold water over the cat every time it came into their garden and that seemed to work. The dog lived to 12 anyway without any further damage from my cat.0 -
Sorry for laughing to myself over your post, BUT " the neighbours never mentioned that they were thinking of getting a puppy, or I would have subtly mentioned that Clarence might not like it..." This statement made me laugh out loud. Do you really think your neighbours should do without a puppy just because your Clarence might not like it.
As getting has said cat proof your garden, and maybe make sure you have a good insurance policy just in case. xxRIP TJ. You my be gone, but never forgotten. That statemenet made me laugh
a lot too...LOL0 -
I think you are the one with the problem. You need to make sure your cat does not trespass into their garden. As far as I am concerned they have every right to own a dog and who are you to tell them otherwise.0

a) I certainly wasn't suggesting that they shouldn't have got a puppy, but I would have considered all factors before just bringing one home.
b) How on earth am I supposed to stop my cat "trespassing" on their garden?
Because c) we cannot cat proof a 4ft fence on all sides, bearing in mind it only consists of 3 planks with big gaps in between - I also don't see how they're going to stop the puppy coming into MY garden when it's a bit bigger, but hey...
Anyway, I have been outside with him this afternoon keeping an eye on him to see how he reacts, and have had a chat with the neighbours about it. So far, all fine.
Thanks for the advice...0 -

Sorry, do not get that.
No one should have to take into account before buying a puppy that the cat next door might come into their garden and attack it!!
Have you addressed with them the problem of the puppy being able to get into your garden when it is bigger?
Glad that it is working out so far.0
