Car insurance renewal

Options
I had my quote to renew from churchill and went online to compare with tesco etc. and then checked churchill online the quote as a new customer was £45 less, so i challenged them and they have now lowered the premium for me.
so its a case of Brand New Customers Only attitude, when hubbys car is due for renewal i'll do the same

By phoning round _(no 0845 numbers) and comparing internet quotes, I saved 50% on the highest quote by going to AA. They gave me a further discount for agreeing to pay by direct debit. It was only a small saving because they added interest but as soon as I got my direct debit details through, I phoned up and asked if I could pay in a lump sum. They agreed and I ended up saving about 10% as I still got the discount but didn't have to pay the interest.

    renewal quotes are a shocker.
i am 23 with an average sized car with a small engine (ins group 4), whenever i get my renewal quote i just laugh.
last year i saved about £300, the year before about the same and the year before my quotes varied from about £800? (i think?) to about £1400
i get the phonebook and go through about a dozen 0800 numbers- 'cos a free quote should be exactly that
i fully expect to do the same again this year, although insurance quote lines are now in india, try explaining to someone in india which italian car you have, such fun *sarcastic*

If i wasn't saving money i would be pulling my hair out about now
things arent the way they were before, you wouldnt even recognise me anymore- not that you knew me back then ;)
BH is my best mate too, its ok :)

I trust BH even if he's from Manchester.. ;)

all your base are belong to us

Alternatively get a quote on-line confused.com are very quick and they will even store the info for next year and remind you of the insurance running out so you can get another quote. Even the same company can be cheaper as I found out last year with Norwich Union.

No longer a user, goodbye folks. PLEASE delete my account. Thank you

you might save even more if you spent 10p on a phone call.

this year i got an online quote from elephant, waited for them to phone me to chase it up and then knocked them down £50 just by telling them that if they got it under 400 i'd take it right now

    Shrek,

I have used confused.com several times and this year, the cheapest quote they found my wife was a not too unreasonable 23% saving on her renewal premium which she was very pleased with. However, before I pressed the [Buy Now] button, I remembered InsureSupermarket.com, the sister site of MoneySupermarket.com. They managed an even more desirable discount of 57% on my wife's renewal premium!!! Needless to say - she went with them. The quote was with More Th>n too, a well known insurer.

Remembering that confused.com check all but 2 insurance companies, I checked through their list to see if they had quoted for More Th>n. They had but reported that 'More Th>n declined to quote as they do not quote for business usage', which of course they do (as InsureSupermarket tesified), so the trick is to not rely solely on confused.com when obtaining quotes.

Don't forget to go back to your original insurance company and ask if they will price-match the lowest quote you have found.

My renewal offer from Kwik-Fit was £250. I found Tesco to be the cheapest, after going through various internet searches and phoning some companies direct. The £50 cashback offer from Tesco brought their quote down to £190.

Kwik-Fit price-matched this and also threw in free Legal Cover. :)

Its a joke really, I have to change my insurance every year because of renewal rip offs, I always get it so much cheaper if I go somewhere else, its a real pain but I guess the companies rely on customer laziness, only way to beat it is not be lazy and maybe they'll change their pricing policy
Aha, so thats how you do a signature!

My hubby has a list of car ins co's and motorbike ins co's and every yr when they are due for renewal I do lots of ringing around. If I get a good quote from one co then call a different co and they ask me the best price I have got so far I always knock £50 off that price to see if they will get close.Usually they say sorry we aren't quite that good but we can do this with free xxxxx. So their quote comes in cheaper than my previous best anyway.Hubby hardly ever sticks with same company every yr but my Dad always does.....he just pays the renwal and never shops around.Just last week I was foning around for bike insurance. The renewal wanted nearly £300 with an excess of £750 but by shopping around I got it down to £150 with an excess of £350.It didn't cost anything to do this as I only call freephone numbers...all I took was a little time.I don't like it either when co's say to you that if you get a cheaper quote call back and we will see if we can match it.....I think to myself that why can't they give me their best price now instead of having to call them again?Only time I will call a co back to match another quote is if they throw in something free.

I will always go the route of confused or insuresupermarket just to help this site. It's also interesting to see that the actual quote on these websites can be far from what they should be when you add in your extras. In June 05 I decided to go through a cashback website to get a £20 cashback for using More Than. This not only was the best quote I found for me, but the £20 was
even better.Of course the renewal was hiked up and even through cashback ,as a new customer,it was still too much.I had a quote done through Auto Direct,on their website. The following day they sent me an improved offer but I had to phone with a special reference number if I wanted it.I armed myself with my usual checklist i.e green card, courtsey car,low excess(being £100)in this case, fully comp.legal cover etc.I was surprised that all that I wanted was included.I was able to tick all the boxes on my list. Then a further maximum discount(special deal because I asked for it)was applied.£272.40 I was told. This worked out even cheaper than through a cashback website (like quidco)and they would return you £30.I was well satisfied,as in three days over the last week I had either done internet quotes
or phoned. All in all usually 12 companies would be tested, some from confused etc.We may all have different circumstances when applying for insurance.I not saying that Auto Direct are going to be the best deal for you,but I have found that through my research and maybe luck in speaking to the right person, who may have wanted to improve their bonus that month,I got a great deal.Haggle until they give in.
