Wing Mirror Dilemma - Who should pay...

I was driving to the beach with my friend when were were looking for a place to park.I found a place to park down a narrow road, and after I had parallel parked, I asked my friend to turn in the wing mirror of my 2005 Honda Jazz. I'm not sure what happened, but she said she had difficulty turning it in, so got behind it and pushed it again. This snapped the wing mirror off the holding unit, leaving it effectively hanging by its wires. We were able to force it back in on the journey back.

The dilemma is that my friend does not want to pay as she feels that as I asked her to do it, it voids her of all responsibility of paying for the repair (which I've been told can be around £200). I feel that she broke the wing mirror and therefore should pay for it, the wing mirror before was working fine (I have turned it in myself, as well as my dad). I personally feel pretty angry about paying for a wing mirror which I didn't damage at all! What do you MSE's think?

  • IMO you should pay
  • I think you should have turned it in yourself as it's likely she did not know what she was doing, but when she realised she was finding it hard she should have said something rather than keeping on pushing.

Best bet is to get a quote - I've got electric mirrors and it was about £85 to replace one of them so the cost might not be as high as you think - then offer to pay half each.
  • Get a 2nd hand one for £20 and dont ask other people to adjust it in future.

My wifes brother actually ripped the door off my car many moons ago. Stiff hinge and rusty panel. The remnants of the panel still attached to the door hinge. I wouldnt have dreamt of asking him to fix it. I laughed it off.
Locked the door and said dont use that one when giving people a lift. :)

Ahhh the days of being totally skint and optional MOT's. Well maybe not optional but ... :)

I think you should pay. You asked your friend to turn it in - she wasn't to know how much pressure should be needed. It was an accident and accidents happen.

In these circumstances if I was your friend I'd be considering whether I wanted to continue your friendship, particularly if you persisted in this stance.
  • Did you ask your friend to pay? I wouldn't dream of doing that. That's the way to ruin a friendship.

Is it actually broken or been popped off its locating pegs? If it's broken, it's your car so cough up and move on.

I think the friend not offering to pay the moment they broke it is the way to ruin friendship. I wouldn't dream of not offering to fix it. Bit surprised they managed to push a wing mirror hard enough to snap it off without realising it felt wrong. But either way it doesn't sound like it was much of a friendship to start with.
  • I second what most people say on here. It wasn't international, if it was me, I would just get it sorted myself. I accept it's maybe bad etiquette the your friend didn't offer, but if they had said immediately they would repair it, that would be like signing a blank cheque stop so I can see why they didn't. She may not have enough money to pay, but as the vehicle owner you should have sufficient funds for unexpected work on your car, just consider this one of those. If it was a driver who'd done it and just driven off you would have to sort it yourself, don't take advantage of your friend just because you saw she was the last one to touch it.
  • £200 for a Honda Jazz wing mirror? Are you sure that is right?
