If you can afford a £500 mobile, can you not afford to insure it?
    I can afford £500.
I can afford to insure, but I will never do. All insurances are very poor value for money except for people like the OP's partner whose poor phone has been
    - thrown and skidded across carparks
    - dropped down flights of stairs (more than once)
    - chewed by an inquisitive moggy
    - had a cup of coffee spilt over it
    - fallen from endless office desks
More careful customers pay their monthly premiums to insure mainly the careless customers like the above one.

My son recently had a "toilet incident" with his Iphone. A replacement from apple has cost far less than either the insurance premiums or a replacement from his network.

  • If the phone is usable and the damage is cosmetic (including a minor crack) then I think there is no case.

But products should be robust. It is normal for something like a phone to fall out of a pocket and hit a hard surface. This shouldn't result in writing off the product.

Years ago a client of mine was a Taiwanese IT product manufacturer. All products were drop tested. It was acceptable for there to be cosmetic damage, batteries to pop out etc. But they'd not get through approvals if damage permanently affected functionality. Just a matter of industrial design, EU standards, and consumer protection legislation.

i think you have absolutely no recourse against the manufacturer. Just like you wouldnt if you crashed your new car accidentally. I know people whose brand new car has been written off by insurers in the first month and the person had to take the second hand value as value drops steeply after you drive off from the dealership.

many newer phones the phone screen and lcd elements are fused and dont have air gaps to decrease reflections but both get damaged when screen cracks and usually more than 100-150 to repair consequently across various manufacturers. dont even bother with diy or other person repairs unless they really know what they are doing. see various xda forums posts by people who work in the screen departments of various phone companies who will say dont waste time with diy repairs for the new screens in new phones.

see if you have a bank account like a plus account that some banks have that usually includes free insurance (once you have the phone registered with the scheme). Such accounts usually allow two phones to be registered.

or some employers in the financial sector give free phone and travel insurance, break down cover, discounted house and car insurance, etc etc for the person employed and spouse. many spouses dont even know they have these benefits! I didnt and never used them for a few years but now use the benefits. if you are a spouse of such a person then check whether you have such benefits too!

instead of spending ten a month for phone insurance see how much a plus account costs as that might be more cost effective (especially if a joint account as both get the benefits as far as i am aware) as you get more benefits than just phone insurance.

  • I crashed my car, my mate crashes his all the time and it's fine but mine got badly damaged. :(

Can I tell the manufacturer for free? After all it is their fault!

Seriously though, you dropped it. It's a phone, it's not meant to be dropped. Take responsibility for your actions and pay for the repair.

You probably didn't ask for the right service. Apple have an out of warranty service, cost is £119 for the 3, 3GS and 4, and £139 for the 4s. As long as the phone is in one piece they will replace the phone, like for like.

It under the heading " My iPhone is not eligible for warranty service. What are my service options?"

I think they could, or under a rock if they drop something made of glass and expect it to be replaced!

    Hi all
my partner's Galaxy S2 has been:

    - thrown and skidded across carparks
    - dropped down flights of stairs (more than once)
    - chewed by an inquisitive moggy
    - had a cup of coffee spilt over it
    - fallen from endless office desks

... and, aside from the small scratches that come from normal use, isn't dented at all

Just to make you feel better, my Galaxy S2 fell from a car holder attached to a vent to the carpeted floor of the car and the screen cracked.

Its called tough luck, I paid about £80 to repair it, and not once did I have the idiotic idea of trying to hold the manufacturer or retailer responsible for my stupid mistake.
