Change of address = Car Insurance Canceld

  • Just how 'bad' is the area you have moved to compared to the area you used to live in?

On a scale the insurance companies use of A to F, M9 postcode is "Refer" which effectively means contact insurance company directly because nobody wants to touch it - no brokers , no comparison sites are likely to give you a quote other than from those who underwrite their own policies.
  • If it says Refer then the only way to get a quote is to contact an insurer directly because most don't want to cover that area due to excessively high claims - usually personal injury crash for cash type stuff.
I live in a "Refer" area. No problem getting quotes through go compare/money supermarket etc.

    Underwriters are Tesco underwriting Ltd.

I've recalculated the policy on-line for my previous address and its now £7,000 (I'm paying £2000) They have put the prices up by £5k for OL5

Their website also quoted the new address at £9000 (Without referring), which means they DO cover the area which is a different story their telling me on the phone...

Starting to look at quotes from comparison websites for my new address, good news is that they mostly come out cheaper than what I'm paying currently with Tesco.

Still, I'm just miffed about my NCD and the fact I have to ring up and explain I've had insurance canceled for the rest of my life...

Thank you for all your help,

    Sorry, no they haven't.

The insurance company postcode ratings table:

They are listed on a scale A-F.
    A = Good Post code/Low Risk
    F = Bad Post code/High Risk
    * = Motorbikes need to be locked in a secure garage
Refer = You need to speak to the car insurance company

    M Manchester
    1-9, 11-24, 40, 60 . . . . . . . . . . . . .. . Refer

    Oldham isn't great either:

    OL Oldham
    1-5, 7-9, 15 . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .. . . F *
    6, 16 . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . Refer
    10-14 . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . E *

So if you'd moved to OL6 or OL16 postcode in Oldham, you'd have had the same response.

If it says Refer then the only way to get a quote is to contact an insurer directly because most don't want to cover that area due to excessively high claims - usually personal injury crash for cash type stuff.

These are Aviva's rating areas for Motorcycle Insurance from 8+ years ago. They're out of date for motorcycles and even eight years ago bore very little relation to their car insurance rating areas. The difference now days is even more pronounced.

If it says refer or says it's a high rating area in that list, it may or may not be the case for car insurance as they're completely different beasts and rating areas have changed dramatically over the last few years

Thank you for all your help,

Not sure there's anything you can do about them actually cancelling apart from trying to speak to someone senior and / or putting in an "Official Complaint" nb official complaints can take some time to be resolved.

One thing you can do is remind Tesco's what their policy wording which is in effect a contract and they have to abide by it.

"If we cancel The administrator, on our behalf, or we can cancel this policy by sending you seven days notice to your last known address. You must then return your Certificate of Motor
Insurance to the administrator, as it is an offence under the Road Traffi c Act not to do so. If you received your Certifi cate of Motor Insurance electronically, you can surrender your Certificate of Motor Insurance by sending an email to the administrator to confirm this. If you want to surrender your Certifi cate of Motor Insurance this way, please contact the administrator who will advise you how to do this."

For obvious reasons an Insurer cannot just cancel a motor policy instantly if it says they will give you seven days notice in writing. It's not ideal but will buy you a little extra time
  • Good news, they've seen the light (/letter from the ombudsman) and offered me cover for the remaining time for £90 additional premium, success!

Good work. I believe involving the Ombudsman costs Tesco money (£400 has been banded about).

    Good result!

Be prepared for renewal as they may decline to offer terms. Insurers do this when they want to get out of a particular business line, or want to get rid of a certain segment of customers. They can just say they won't be offering renewal terms, meaning they don't want to insure you for the following year.

This is not the same as a cancellation so won't cause you any problems in the future. Just shop around ahead of your renewal date so you're prepared if you need to switch. :) (Obviously the MSE way is to shop around even if they send a renewal notice!)
  • I too am having a very similar problem.

2 months left before policy renewal, phoned them yesterday to advise of address change from HU5 3SS to HU5 3LY. AA route planner calculated the difference of 0.2 miles. I can physically see the new property from my current property.

They are cancelling my policy with no charge, but I am losing my 3rd years No claims Bonus. Being only 23 years of age, these mean a hell of lot! I have phoned the financial ombudsman for help and they are putting a complaint forward but I doubt this will stop my policy being cancelled.

Does anyone have any tips on what I should do please?

Use the MSE guide to shop round for the best deal with a new company.

If you find your new address unacceptable to other companies, see if a local broker (not swinton) can help.
