Change of address = Car Insurance Canceld
Heya,
I'm wondering on what to do next in my current situation;
Basically I moved address 5 miles down the road over the weekend, and phoned Tesco Insurance last night to inform them of my new address, I also told them my car was now on the drive
They did a recalculation of my insurance and they said the area was too high risk to provide insurance, and they would have to terminate my insurance with immediate effect. They would not allow me to keep my previous address on the insurance despite me still renting it for the next month (when my insurance is due for renewal) which I can leave the car there overnight and walk to my new address.
They've refused to honor my no claims I've accumulated over the last year, and as a 1 time 'gesture' offered to wave the cancellation fee...
So I'm now stuck without a car and insurance with no way of getting to work, and my insurance record is screwed due to having a canceled policy on it now.
I have not had a accident since driving
Held driving license for 5 years
22 (23 next month)
No Convictions / Speeding tickets ever.
Is there anything I can do?

A gesture? Really, what sort of con artist is this insurance company! Cheeky beggars!
While I think it's probably a good thing they have cancelled (heaven knows what you would be like if you had to make a claim).
I don't see how they can refuse to honour your no claims. You either have no claims or you don't!
Sorry I am not much help here as I've never experienced anything like this. I think I would phone up a manager and start making some noise at them about the no claim thing. As for you're insurance, you're probably best to go elsewhere. Have a look around and see if you can't negotiate something ASAP. You have a fairly valid reason for the cancelled insurance so perhaps can negotiate (although insurance companies are pretty hard to negotiate anything with)."So long and thanks for all the fish" :hello:0 -
The "cancelled policy" issue won't affect you.
They are cancelling purely because they don't provide cover for your new address, not because of any default by you. (The same thing happens when people change cars to a model not acceptable to the insurer)
You cannot be given any NCD for the part year, but any you had at the start of the year will still be valid (assuming no claims have been made during the part year).0 -
Just how 'bad' is the area you have moved to compared to the area you used to live in?"You were only supposed to blow the bl**dy doors off!!"0

Not much different, OL (Oldham) To M9 (North manchester)
I don't know the insurance tables for the areas, But I suspect Tesco put the price up dramatically for all younger drivers during this year and me changing address has forced this increase on me, instead of fobbing me off with a ridiculous renewal quote.
I've spoken with the Financial Ombudsman and they agreed that it seemed unfair and offered to investigate on my behalf.0 -
Do I still have to check the box on insurance comparison websites however? or if I don't check it and they find the above insurance, that would be grounds for refusal of a claim etc?......
If you check the box you will find few (if any) companies will give you a quote.
This isn't a "cancellation" due to your default.
What you can do if you are worried is find your new policy then explain the circs of the "cancellation" to the insurer before buying a policy from them.0 -
Yes, I think your best bet would be to do the usual searches for quotes without ticking that box, and then phone up the ones you're interested in and explain the circumstances. They will advise you either way."So long and thanks for all the fish" :hello:0

ive known some insurers where something beyond your control, i.e moving to an address unbeknown to you they dont cover in that area, and the policy almost ending buy a couple of weeks issue the NCB for that year. speak to a supervisor or manager, they concelled on you 1 month/ 3-4weeks prior to renewal and see if they will issue the NCB.
OR, go back on their website, run a quote with new address etc and see if they do give you that quote, and not a sorry please call for assistance we are unable to quote get the ref number, and call back and ask for explanation.0 -
Which insurance company underwrite your policy, it will say on your Insurance Certificate0

Are they refunding you for the month you will now no longer be covered for?0

Sorry, no they haven't.
The insurance company postcode ratings table:
They are listed on a scale A-F.
A = Good Post code/Low Risk
F = Bad Post code/High Risk
* = Motorbikes need to be locked in a secure garage
Refer = You need to speak to the car insurance company
M Manchester
1-9, 11-24, 40, 60 . . . . . . . . . . . . .. . Refer
Oldham isn't great either:
OL Oldham
1-5, 7-9, 15 . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .. . . F *
6, 16 . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . Refer
10-14 . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . E *
So if you'd moved to OL6 or OL16 postcode in Oldham, you'd have had the same response.
If it says Refer then the only way to get a quote is to contact an insurer directly because most don't want to cover that area due to excessively high claims - usually personal injury crash for cash type stuff.0
