Possible or not?
You didn't ask about Loughton.
But to enter into the spirit of things, I punched it into Rightmove and was relieved to find not a single such property. I did, however, specify 'this area only'.
Are you thinking of deserting Scotland once it has its independence?0 -

Ah, yes, sorry about that my simian friend.
But the question was what you can buy for 120,000 pounds.
Not 120,000 peanuts.;)Are you thinking of deserting Scotland once it has its independence?
Ummmm, no.“The great enemy of the truth is very often not the lie – deliberate, contrived, and dishonest – but the myth, persistent, persuasive, and unrealistic.

However there's good and bad in any town. A lot of these are cheaper areas are very cosmopolitan, but that doesn't make them bad places to live. Move to most of them and the train and motorway links are pretty good. So if you're looking for a first step on the ladder its not too bad. You've set a tough target - well under the average for a relatively large property - but the proof is that they exist.
But the other thing is, its not just people starting put...its people ending up too. Having searched for a place around that budget with one parent not so long ago, we were very limited, but there was some choice. We looked at one beds up to three beds. But very, very limited.
Now, other parent did not want to be alone, only left london for the family and would really want to be back there. We are wondering what we can go in with on a small mortgage plus there cash and tbh, i ama bit scared to even look. The hour thing no good for us, would have to be central to make sense (both time is money on weekdays but also, oyster cards are money!). While both parties are goiong to have to compromise, parent does not want east london, and dh must be close enought to get to work (where ever that is next year). I reckon extending mortgage here and buying there something unmortgageable cash is the best bet, bit also resent that we will be buying short lease hold most likely, and frankly struggle to see how that puts us in a better position than renting.0 -
Runcorn

And cheaper properties as well fall under the three bed semi category in Runcorn. Picked on this one because it's a couple of streets from me and I live in a very similar one.
About 15 miles from Chester and Liverpool and Warrington.
As a town it's not great, but it's not bad and the area we live in is OK. Move across the bridge to Widnes and you'd have to add 10k for a n equivalent property and into Stockton Heath which is about 7 miles away, around about £80k.0 -

You really are a tool Hamish..
It is all very well to live in your property obssessed bubble where you live on your own. But for a start lets look at the "one hour drive" part. Straight away you are talking a 100 miles a day in fuel(2000 per month) also the car that has to do that trip day in and day out.
Also some people have families and CHILDREN, I know you just will not get it Hamish, but most peoples lives revolve(and should do) around being with people you want to be with.
Yours is a daily quest to make life harder, it is probably ok for people like you(or maybe you are massive debt, who knows!!)or Wotsthat who purchased his council house and now sits in his empty estate agents most days preaching on MSE. But people driving every day for two(three in bad traffic) hours a day before they even start work is a society going backwards.
It really is a grim big brother lets have 50 year mortgages don't care about anyone else world that you live in.0 -
Lots of bits of London 1hr = 10 miles in peak hours
Plus 3 beds and you are probably with kids so you would also want to be catchment for a semi-decent school so you can strike most of the houses found so far.
I had a look in the areas I put up re schools and while you aren't going to find the best schools in the country you can certainly get a place in a school that meets or exceeds the national average in many of them (I didn't look them all up, not that big a nerd).
It's all about managing expectations. This is not going to be an easy find given price under national average but it is possible. Please stay safe in the sun and learn the A-E of melanoma: A = asymmetry, B = irregular borders, C= different colours, D= diameter, larger than 6mm, E = evolving, is your mole changing? You're going to struggle in London lir tbh. You could get something reasonable and one bed within commute to London, but that's about it. In terms of the other location though, have you looked at park homes? They may offer a viable solution. My parents have looked at them before and there were some really nice ones, though you do need to be careful with the site fees and check out who owns them to make sure they aren't a shark. Please stay safe in the sun and learn the A-E of melanoma: A = asymmetry, B = irregular borders, C= different colours, D= diameter, larger than 6mm, E = evolving, is your mole changing? Aren't you moving the goal posts a bit. First it was just £120k for a 3 bedder in various locations, but now you are implying that these are places that are good for a family with young kids or "half decent" areas. I haven't followed all of the links in this thread, but I've yet to see one I'd even consider buying to live in alone, let alone bring up a family.
My particular favourite is the 3 bedder with a "garden" in London posted by ILW, in an area that no one sane would choose to live in even if they were giving the house away for free.0
