That's OK Graham. Just have a nice cup of tea and relax.“The great enemy of the truth is very often not the lie – deliberate, contrived, and dishonest – but the myth, persistent, persuasive, and unrealistic.
Belief in myths allows the comfort of opinion without the discomfort of thought.”

The thing is Hamish, you're going to get people who will say "ew, Luton/Bedford/Stevenage/Dunstable/Wellingborough (insert name of any cheaper town) I wouldn't want to live there". However there's good and bad in any town. A lot of these are cheaper areas are very cosmopolitan, but that doesn't make them bad places to live. Move to most of them and the train and motorway links are pretty good. So if you're looking for a first step on the ladder its not too bad. You've set a tough target - well under the average for a relatively large property - but the proof is that they exist. Please stay safe in the sun and learn the A-E of melanoma: A = asymmetry, B = irregular borders, C= different colours, D= diameter, larger than 6mm, E = evolving, is your mole changing? Bath itself has pretty high house prices for a non South East location - however you could just about scrape in the definition with this 3 bed ground floor flat in Radstock http://www.rightmove.co.uk/property-for-sale/property-35118676.html which is only about 7 miles out of the centre of Bath and 20 miles out from central Bristol. That said its the only one in the entire unitary authority at the moment - another £10k would bring 5 houses into the picture.Adventure before Dementia!0

Yes, going east or south of York will reveal the cheaper areas. If you go west, you're getting into Harrogate prices. Whilst York was the most expensive northern town for house prices in a relatively recent (last 12 months) survey, Harrogate certainly has its pockets!0 -
Well, most of those are at the 25-30 mile (and remember that's in a straight line) mark ... so most would have to be discounted as "daft to live there".... but I'd probably look first at Sawtry and Mildenhall.HAMISH_MCTAVISH wrote: »
Could you post a couple of links to the 30 mile ones in Cambridge that look decent for a young couple with kids, for example?
http://www.rightmove.co.uk/property-for-sale/property-39010964.html - some bizarre auction system, so could go higher in price.

Although in reality I wouldn't want to live in either
Both picked at random.... the trouble with Cambridge is that it can take you an hour to get that last 5 miles in rush hour if you're in the wrong direction.0 -

Well it is really.
The average wage across all workers is 18-22k for 30 miles out of York. 21k for York itself. 26k full time.
So were talking 5-6x income houses here.
And if you are living 30 miles out, you can count on paying £200-250 in fuel per month to get to work in the first place.0
