Brilliant thread!
We love this: fry an onion and garlic, add a tin of chopped tomatoes, a tin of tuna, some oregano and let it simmer for a few minutes while you put the pasta on to cook.
Really cheap and tasty. If you like, you can put peppers in, courgettes, fresh tomatoes, tomato puree - whatever you like (or that you've got left over). Grated cheese on top is lovely too0 -
Tin of beans with half a tin of corned beef cubed, and cooked until the corned beef goes mushy. Can add onions if you like. Served on toast, jacket potato, or with chips. I also blob brown sauce on it.
Add a tin of veg soup to make it go further! Lovely!
Mash potato & tomato soup is a real fav in our house when anybody isn't feeling well, my mum always gave it to us when we were poorly as kids & it really works as a "pick me up"0 -
Cheap and cheerful, what we call 'big !!!!!!s'.(Apologies to grandchildren)
Wash potatoes, cut into chip shapes, toss lightly in oil, bake in hottish oven till cooked and brown-delish .You can't stay young for ever, but you can be immature for the rest of your life.0 -
Forgot to add a recipe for mayonnaise-cheap,quick,tasty and quite impressive!Contains raw egg so not for elderly or pregnant .
In liquidiser or processor break 1 egg,bit of garlic, salt & pepper, turn on machine.Slowly add oil(not olive) until noise changes-I know but try it- should now have thickened, add lemon juice or a vinegar to taste.Put in lidded container in fridge, use within 3 days.
Great mixed half and half with yogurt to own coleslaw. You can't stay young for ever, but you can be immature for the rest of your life.0 -
I've just remembered something else I love!
Toast some pittas and split open to make pockets. Either make or buy hummus (chickpeas, garlic, lemon juice, tahini paste - add coriander if you have any - whizz up in food processor) and spread it inside the pockets. In a food processor shred some red and white cabbage and an onion and put it inside the pockets. It's delicious and really filling - and good for you too. Kids love them because they're fun and can get involved making them. You'll never see kids so happy to eat cabbage0 -

Poached eggs, mash and baked beans always goes down a treat and nice and filling, especially with bread and butter to wipe up the egg.0

When we were kids we used to have grilled cheese for lunch. Grate cheese onto a plate. Add a splash of milk and Worcester sauce if liked. Put under a hot grill until the cheese starts to bubble and turn brown. Serve with lots of bread to wipe up the "gravy". Lovely! With five kids under 10 my mam had to watch the pennies but we certainly got our fair share of calcium. No wonder our dentist always commented on our lovely teeth!0

Debbie R,forgot about cheese in milk which brothers and I loved especially if the top was burned- ugh, I would hate it now.We also used to have sliced boiled onions covered in cheese and grilled, yummy! You can't stay young for ever, but you can be immature for the rest of your life.0

French toast.....serve with maple syrup and crispy streaky bacon on the side. If you want to be really indulgent then put icing sugar (powdered sugar in the USA) on top of maple syrup. Can also serve pancakes with maple syrup, icing sugar and bacon. Fattening American classics.0
