Jobcentre forcing me on Work Program

  • You can have the date you are due to start work programme moved back 3 months if you have a job interview coming up.

    I agree.

I accompanied a friend to the local job centre and the 'jobs' were either mickey mouse cold calling sales commission (self employment) positions or low paid jobs that required experience, own transport, qualifications and so on, even if unskilled (security, retail, care work, etc).

It must be very demoralising. At a time when the OP is sapped of hope, drive and energy by their experience of unemployment, probably their only way out of the clutches of the DWP is to be the master of their own destiny, find their own place in the world, perhaps carve it out through self employment (and this is hard enough to do when motivated).
If anyone thinks they are going to get a job from the Job Centre then frankly I'm not surprised they are unemployed.

    Hi,

Since finishing college I've not been able to secure full time work.

I've been on Jobseekers for a while and they told me I'd have to go on the Work Program. However I've already been to the same company they are suggesting now and found them really unhelpful and uninspiring, the company itself is just located in a business block and is just a horrible old room surrounded by 10 old computers which barely work and has a desk in the middle of the room with newspapers. I don't know why this is supposed to be a good thing because they don't help me find work and I find it really uninspiring and depressing. Is there any way I can refuse to go to this work program considering I've already been there and my feelings about it? I went to a different work program which was great and ended up in some work but got made redundant, but this one is just dreadful.

Refusing to sign the consent form to use your personal data is a start. http://www.consent.me.uk/
  • Ollie,

I have another option for you wake up at 6, commute for 2 hours through the West Wales Country Roads, then do a full days work. Then commute 2 hours back home, scoff some tea, then turn on the laptop until about 12:30 to do your admin...

Thats my job, so stop complaining!

    turn on the laptop

would you be so cocky if you had an old PC instead of your flash new laptop ;)
  • The real world isn't always like college or University where you usually have choices. Many people work full time in grotty places with ancient equipment, in jobs and with people they might not like too much. Because they have to until they can find something else.

The Post Office used to recruit extra staff at this time of year. Not sure if they still do but worth a look. They used to have an online application form, and you did a test, to see if you could correctly identify/sort addresses etc. If you got through that bit they used to ask you for an interview.

I don't agree with the Work Programme being run privately, as drive for profit will mean poor quality advisors, equipment, premises and results. Unfortunately once contracted out to the Work Providers you're stuck with them for the next 2 years.

The problem is, its 9am-5pm 5 days a week sitting in a grotty room surrounded by ancient computers. If anything it prevents me even ringing up employers and sending out e-mails. (Because hotmail is even blocked).

Have you officially been told this? I know someone who is on the work programme and all they have to do is is see their advisor once a fortnight for five minutes and show them their job search.
  • Hi, yes the wp is not for everyone in fact it's a pain my partner was on it at one stage and no he never found his current job through them. The wp lasts 2 years, even when you find employement they still phone you and if you end up unemployed during your 2 years you go back to whatever stage you were at with the wp. My partner was on it i think for 12 weeks he was geting moved to the 2nd stage when they can expect you to come in everyday. They do try to help you with cv's and courses etc, but you do need the right person. You could be building up a "friendship" with your advisor then you get moved to the next stage of the wp. The person who said refusing to sign the consent form is a start i can confirm this is rubbish and makes no difference, my partner did this and it made no difference the advisor was suprised no big deal was made of it really. Midnight express are you sure your friend isn't signing on every fortnight my partner was in for more than 5 minutes along with everyone else you don't just show your job search. They have you on computers, phoning employers, looking at papers and discusing what training courses they have or what jobs are available every single time lasts longer than 5 mins it can be hours but not 9-5 normally.
