Why are you asking me that? When did I say "fewer public sector workers"?

I've given you the data that does prove my point in trumps. Please don't ask me to do grubby little research on your behalf. I have better things to do.

Post number 16 on 10/09/12 you said the public sector back then was a fraction of what it is now. I just wondered if you were able to back up that assertion. You obviously aren't able to, fair enough.
Someone else was able to provide data from the civil service which showed the highest number of civil servants post world war 2 was in 1977 - 760,000. Now it is 400,000.
  • I earn more in the public sector than everyone else I qualified with (as an accountant in private practice) bar one person who went into investment banking. I would probably earn £10k a year less (minimum) in the private sector doing a directly equivalent job, I know this because people keep ringing me up and offering me £10k-20k less a year to move to equivalent jobs in the private sector. Oh well, another sweeping generalisation debunked.

Happy for you your getting hte most.

No statement is true for 100% of people, but I constantly get told by friends and colleagues who have left public service to "get out, as wages are higher in public".

Certainly Im currently looking at 3 jobs basically doing a similar job to what I do now - one isnt as high up the chain. All 3 pay more than Im currently on. £5k for the one with less responisbility and £10+ for the other two.

No - your figures proove diddly - appart from the public secotr is COSTING more in real terms that years ago. it doesnt break down WHY - and a big part of WHY is higher costs charged by PRIVATE suppliers/manuifacturers/contractors, and has nothing to do with the number of public sector workers - which was the original statement.

So by implication local government and the civil service is "bad"? Some of these people do very difficult jobs and do not deserve to be the butt of such dismissive remarks. For example social workers dealing with child abuse, scientists supporting the Army in front line operations, forensic scientists supporting the police.............

I agree with the social workers - however those scientists arnt public sector. the government itself does no research. I may be wrong on the last point, but I though the forensic people were privately contracted as well - not public sector.

Not at all. There will be accountant posts in private industry or far more than you earn. It's just that you haven't been offered those posts.

You can't just go on your own experience of what you have been offered.

Of course they are but they aren't equivalent jobs. Since I have been approached by big 4 accountancy firms, magic circle law firms and investment banks all specifically trying to hire forensic accountants with litigation experience, I know what my exact role pays in the private sector and it's significantly less.

I know the question wasn't asked of me, but for all public sector employment, there's data from 1999...

1999 to now, all public sector:

If you're interested in the civil service, the data goes back further.
1902 to present, civil service only:

Can't see similar for NHS or local government. Obviously there's also been outsourcing to the private sector across this shorter time period.

    NHS back to 1999

    You are mistaken

"Dstl scientists and analysts are directly deployed on operations to provide direct support to commanders. During 2011 around 18 scientists were deployed on operations at any one time"

Forensics are on the verge of being contracted out/privitised
  • No silly, I didn't mean that I don't know how to connect to social media, I meant that our internet systems prevent us from doing so.

    ... whooooosh....

    Well fancy that!

Although apparently there is a pilot going on for Twitter in a few teams around the country, but this is purely for us to contact customers in a professional capacity.

Somehow, I find it strange to see the words "Twitter" and "professional" in the same sentence.

Why are you so sarcastic/cynical? I don't even see the value in your last posting.

    It's just a gift, I suppose.

If you can't be kind, at least have the decency to be vague. I'm not cynical. I'm just experienced. If I agreed with you, we'd both be wrong.

I'll try to be nicer, if you'll try being smarter.
