falko89 says above if you want an Eire signal (Saorview)
so if you want both Freeview and Saorview you will need a Freeview HD box

    or a HD TV

The first part of that statement is correct; however the second part is misleading.

You'll *either* need a Freeview HD box or a TV *with a built-in Freeview HD decoder*.

There are two things happening here.
We're getting the analogue switch off, freeing up Freeview space, allowing us to have 3 RTE channels broadcast to us from our own transmitters. Freeview HD tuner required (either box or built in). These will have some licensing restrictions on them, meaning some football matches or whatever won't be broadcast. Obviously, this all comes through your current aerial, after the 2nd retune on October 24th.
But there's also Saorview, the Republic's Freeview. Anyone who has an aerial pointing at one of their transmitters, and currently gets analoge RTE channels, will lose them. If the signal is good enough, they can buy a Saorview box (or Freeview HD box or TV) to receive this service. This will NOT have the licensing restrictions mentioned above, since you're tuned into the native TV service. I would definitely want to check the signal before spending any money on equipment though.

Nope, BT Vision is Freeview, not FreeviewHD. It does download HD stuff over the net, but doesn't have an HD tuner. Nothing to do with the TV in this case.

You've got an SD Freeview box (BT Vision) and an SD TV.
You need a FreeviewHD tuner, which by the info you provided you don't seem to have.
If you attach your BT box to an HDTV, the BT box will give you exactly the same channels.
If you buy a TV with a FreeviewHD tuner (NOT just an HDTV, or even Full HD TV, these refer to the actual screen), you will receive the RTE channels on it. Nothing to do with the BT box though, so no recording.

Oh sorry - do you maybe get RTE over the internet? It's not being broadcast by any transmitters in Northern Ireland currently. Are you receiving RTE analogue? That's not through the BT box, it's through your TV's analogue tuner, and those transmissions are switching off on October 24th too.
Also, if there's still some confusion, can you let us know the full extent of your TV setup - we know so far that you have a BT Vision box and a non HD TV. Aerial(s), Satellite dish etc?

no, its not on the internet, its on the tv....its on the BT Vision list, away at the end of the tv channels list, and its a perfect picture? (i do also get RTE 1, 2 TV3 and TNaG on analogue at numbers 5 / 8 on the tv)

i have BT Vision box, non hd tv, no satellite, and an outdoor aerial,

the only thing i can think of is i live right on the border and very near the TV transmitter in ROI, could it be coming through from there?
