Running System File Checker (sfc /scannow) without a Windows XP CD

Have been having problems with my PC. Have got rid of all files that I don't need and have now been able to run Malware Bytes and virus checker.

My question is - having also run chkdsk, the other thing for me to look at is sfc /scannow. Problem is that cos' I bought the PC with Windows XP preinstalled, I don't have any discs. When I run sfc /scannow it's prompting me to install the CD (which I don't have). Presumably this means that there are files that need to be amended - is there any way of getting around this?!?

Any way of getting round this? Only by providing an acceptable Windows XP installation CD, probably which has been slipstreamed to include the final XP Service Pack.

Or the equivalent on the hard disk.

Unfortunately the aim of SFC is to find the right level of system files which can be copied to your own Windows installation on your hard disk,

Oh well. I think in an ideal world I would reformat this PC but this is impossible without the installation CDs. Stupid question but would any of the numerous Recovery and Restore CDs you see advertised on ebay work with the files that sfc /scannow is asking for?

Post the relevant bits from cbs.log (sfcdetails.txt)

    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/929833#method2
    1. Open an elevated command prompt as described in the previous step 1.
    2. At the command prompt, type the following command, and then press ENTER:
    3. findstr /c:"[SR]" %windir%\Logs\CBS\CBS.log >%userprofile%\Desktop\sfcdetails.txt
  • Thanks for reply but I don't understand your suggestions. I'm using XP and like I say, when I run sfc /scannow, it starts prompting me for discs etc. I couldn't see a way round running the program without the discs.

    Do this.

Download Vew from the link below and save it to your desktop:

    Link

After you've downloaded it and saved it to your desktop:
    • Double click vew.exe
    • For Select log to Query, choose: System.
    • For Select type to list, choose: Error
    • For Number or date of events, choose Number of events > Enter 20 in the box
    • Click Run
A logfile will open. Copy/paste the log here.
  • Thanks for your patience! Have just run the log - see below. Am popping out for a couple of hours now.

    When did you run SFC?

The details of the files it cant replace will be found in the Event Viewer (Start > run > eventvwr.msc)as errors under the System section with the source as Windows File Protection.

Run vew again as above, but enter the date you ran sfc in the From & To fields under Number or date of events. Leave the number of events as 20

EG: If it was yesterday, 08/09/2012

Make and model number of the offending machine?

If it's the DELL, the recovery disc is in your Inbox and your Drivers and Applications can be found here
  • The computer is a desktop PC - AMD Sempron(tm) 2400+ - 1.68 GHz, 1.18 GB of RAM with XP Home Edition, Version 2002, Service Pack 3.

Had to give up running sfc /scannow as I seemed to be in a constant loop of it asking me for discs etc.

    If you can determine which files are the problem then you can decide either;

    1. Is it necessary to replace them.
    2. Are there replacements already on your hard drive.
