The computer is a desktop PC - AMD Sempron(tm) 2400+ - 1.68 GHz, 1.18 GB of RAM with XP Home Edition, Version 2002, Service Pack 3.

Had to give up running sfc /scannow as I seemed to be in a constant loop of it asking me for discs etc.

    Is it a DELL?
  • You can change an entry in the registry so it looks for the system files on the pc instead of the cd:

Change the reg entry in HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE Software Microsoft WindowsNT Current Version

SourcePath, type in the new location as follows: C:\Windows\ServicePackFiles.

You will then change the source (where Windows is going to get the files) to

    C:\Windows\ServicePackFiles\I386

You will need to tell your computer you have the files on your PC. We do this is the registry

(type regedit in the Run box on the start menu) by navigating to:

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\
    CurrentVersion\Setup

You will see various entries here on the right hand side. The one we want is called:

    SourcePath

It probably has an entry pointing to your CD-ROM drive, and that is why it is asking for the XP

CD. All we need to do is change it to:

    C:\

Simply double click the SourcePatch setting and a new box will pop up allowing you to make the

    change.

Now restart your computer and type into run cmd, then in command box type sfc /scannow (note space).

But back up your registry first (I use Erunt as it's more reliable than windows reg backup).

Someone kindly sent me a link to a rar file containing XPSP3, but having downloaded and unpacked the rar file I can't find the iso file to burn it to disk.

So what exactly would you like us to do about it if we can't see the link? Don't post it if you don't have permission to post it here, sent it via PM.

Why not state the problem, along with exact details of the machine involved?

XP preinstalled? Retail copy but disc missing?

I was asked not to post the link. The file that I downloaded was in rar format. When I unpacked the rar file I couldn't find the iso file with which to burn a disk.

I have XP installed but can't run sfc /scannow without a Windows XP CD (as per the Original Poster's query) because it asks me to insert the disk which I never had in the first place.
  • @ HereToday. Many thanks for your help. My file associations caused the mix up.
