Have you read the OP's reason for asking for advice?

If you cannot see why your suggestion that the first thing to do is write to the police to point out to them their notice is incorrect and will they please clarify it is "poor advice" then I can't help you!

This may not go away, what harm can contacting the police do?

They have six months to apply for summons. The reason for waiting to respond is so they cannot correct the issue and send out a new nip.

As there has been a collision no nip is required.
