Course you can!
Why can't we have 50% off vouchers like they do in America?
Wonder if I'll be fit enough by thursday to get the bus over to hobbycraft? Could splurge on some magazines...Cross Stitch Cafe Monthly Challenge Member #27
12/12/12 challenge-[STRIKE]Season's Greeting Newton's Law[/STRIKE] Christmas polar bear-finished on time!
Thanks to all the girls in the Cross Stitch Cafe! You're all fantastic! :A0 -
Apologies for cutting quotes - just got to the end and have 11 people quoted to reply to andit may go on a while.would it not work if you stitched the twelve days of ... in black and the word christmas in red?
so feeling much better than I did yesterday and guess what, I'm back at work!
That's a fab idea about Christmas in Red. Glad you're feeling better.maria_and_the_imps wrote: »morning all, feeling very poorly.................
did anybody on here know about the cath kidstone give aways with the telegraph this weekend, cant believe i missed them !! i havent seen anything about them till it was to late
Hope you're feeling better now.
hubby has hurt his knee - he MUST be poorly..............he cancelled his pool meet at the pub monday!!!!
IIRC - the telegraph sorted you out - YAY for them.flowerofscotland wrote: »chicky What sewing machine did you buy? Aldi has some cheap craft books in their Sunday deals - the Sew one might be what you are looking for It's also worth looking in charity shops for basic sewing books
Just the Argos Value one (had better reviews then the other cheaper on on the site.)
It's funny you should find that book. It was the one that most appealed to me in Hobbycraft but it was expensive (when I knew I'd be able to get it cheaper online).
My ALDI (funnily next door to hobbycraft) didn't have any of the 'Sew' books in but i think i saw the others. Too far to trek back there. I'm gonna have another looksy online later as I fancy making the kids stockings next year (cross stitch backed on felt). WHSmith had a VERY poor range - was realllly disapointed.called 'Feeding Time'. It's a large bird table with birds feeding from it.
I don't think I have it but I do have other birds/ bird tables ones as I was looking at them considering stitching a bit for my grandparents 'bird' hamper for Christmas. let me know if you want me to look again (probably at the weekend) and show you some.Track it Down - my request has actually been published - was looking for Las Vegas design but don't like the ones chosen for me I'm afraid. Was looking for something more showing the skyline or the millions of lights that make up Vegas by night
fame at last - sorry it's not what you were after.
nope I cannot find anything other then this angel- which i guess is kinda themain design you want but a lot cheaper and in cross stitch.MallowBrain wrote: »Chicky Great news about the sewing machine, I had one for christmas....its never been opened lol, I don't even know how to thread one up so I think I need to find some lessons. Hope you have great fun with yours
thankfully it did tell me how to do THAT in the book or I'da been completly stumped.blue_eyed_girl wrote: »Had a lovely day yesterday visiting our neice in Malton - I think I said we were off to York as we usually visit her when we are having a few days in York and we do a bit of a detour to visit her while we are in that neck of the woods. Anyway we had a lovely time and got back safely (thankfully the weather stayed good for us). Unfortunately no stitching at all yesterday or today but hey ho - see what tomorrow brings.
chicky - good luck with the sewing machine. You clever so and so getting so organised with the meals. Its a good job we all love chicken in our household - we seem to live on it at times. DS usually asks "in what form are we having the chicken tonight"?.
Glad you had a good time - I love York.
well my chicken soup was HORRIBLE thankfully the pasta was amazing and I'll defo be making that again.
i woulda made chicken and bacon pie but had no pastry, and not enough butter to make it with.
Made shepherds pie today (while hubby and DS1 had takeaway pizza)...... thankfully that was really nice and I didn't miss not eating the pizza at all. that and I was fuming he had bought it and wouldn't eat it out of principle.
lol I love your Ds's quote.Ok so now for another question that I often think about when I'm stitching.
Firstly do any of you use the loop method? I.e. one strand of thread folded in half - so you catch the thread when you pass the needle through? I sometimes use this method but do find that it doesn't always produce the neat start you want.
Yup I use this method 90% of the time. Now for my question....
Lets assume I've been stitching something and have run out of thread so need to load some more thread onto my needle (be it the same colour or a different colour - doesn't really matter). I have the last few stitches made using the remnants of the thread on my needle (you know seeing just how much you can stitch before you really really must rethread the needle...) so to keep things neat - when i start with the next few stitches, I need to stitch over what I have just stitched to secure the loose strand of thread. But when I start with a new length of thread obviously that needs to be secured too - hence my question Do you (a) secure both loose ends at the same time ? or b (as I have been doing recently) secure the thread for the existing stitches first and then secure the new thread a few stitches later? (perhaps when I'm going back to complete the cross)
I 90% of the time secure the thread by going back through the stitches on the back THEN start my new thread with the loop method.
Occasionally I tie the 2 threads together but this is messy and I'm not really sure why I do it . there must have been a good reason at the time.Ruth_honey wrote: »Missed hospital app yesterday as my back got a lot worse. Ohh I love them esp the hanging ones. do they hang one on every day?? What a brill excuse for stitching all those little motifs I love.Just seen this on the facebook page of WOCS - I'm sure it applies to some of you on here:
Just re-posted that on the forum on facebook too lol - great minds think alike.sweetcarer wrote: »Oh Ruth hope you feel easier soon - my back has been a bit sore more since the accident. Well tonight I was late home as I went to collect my new threads - £75 for 500 give or take plus a DMC wooden box (the one where you put the picture on top - think someone on here posted it once upon a time. Also a canvasy type bag to hold the 5 plastic floss boxes. So works out about 15p each and the seem quite full the bobbins - maybe the full 8m. Still to check what is there - see DMC has a check list on their website so will print it out and check. Hubby said I looked so happy sitting there counting them. He took a photo - maybe I will post it later - but my face looks so red - he says cause I am happy. SO with that cost we are on beans and toast for the rest of the month!
Oh nooo - thats a reallly naff scrap value isn't it.
BARGAIN - who needs to eat.loves how my "I've been censored" signature has been censored. LOL. Happy Christmas. :xmastree:0 -
evening all, table mat number 5 finished 1 to go!!!
hi chicky i was wondering where you were earlier, and if you hadnt of been on i was going to enquire if anyone had 'seen' you about
i also always use the loop method i find it keep the back neater and im a little bit obsesive about that
i also cant help with carting a picture sorry
the advent calendars are one of my favourite things i have ever sewed so that you everyone for the comments, what i do is i keep the insides of the shop brought choccie ones as they have one of them each year as well (they do one before school and one after) any ho i then melt chocolate and poor them in to the moulds pop them in the fridge for a little while so it set again, pop them out wrap them in either celophane if i have any or a chopped up sandwich bag (because you only need a little bit) tie it up with a little bit of ribbon and then use that ribbon to tie it to the ring, which is a little curtain ring, so they get a choccie each day, my kids love them and im really proud of them,
but i did notice that the square red one is fraying so i might make that one into a hanging one as well.13 in 2013 challenge 9/130 -
Maria - your advent calendars are lovely. The first one is very similar to the one I had from Avon about 12 years ago. Still not finished, hoping to get it finished once I have completed my presents for this year.
I've just invested in this http://www.rucraft.co.uk/oh-holy-night-counted-cross-stitch-kit I'm hoping to use it as my 10.11.12 - 11.12.13 piece. Really like it but will need to change the I as I don't like Emmanual spelt with an I. Going to change it to Infant Jesus I think - unless anyone has any other ideas.

Love the cats and imagine, good start on the angel
Thanks girls, luckily I didn't spend all day hunting for itSk00bie - love the cats. Have to say that O really love what blackwork looks like and tend to enjoy stitching it, although large expenses of the same can become a bit boring, but sometimes feel the same about large sections of cross stitch if just one colour. Also, your angel is coming along great, I take it you would recommend the metallic taht you're using. could you remind me where you got it from and how much it cost please. Thanks.
The metallics are DMC diamant, unfortunately I can't remember where I got them from as I had them in my stash. They come in a 35m spool and I think the price quoted in the article was 3.50 which sounds about right! HTH
Ruth-honey - Thanks for the heads up about the 20% off at Hobbycraft. Just checked my email and I have a coupon tooMight toddle down and pick up my magazine and a couple of threads I need :T
Managed a few stitches on a Christmas ornament on the tube on the way into town. Am going to do a bit on the Angel now, although I may fall asleep on my stitching, was a very long (but lovely!) day today.
Hope those under the weather feel better soon xxCross Stitch Cafe Challenger No. 26 :hello:XStitch to do list:-- Birth Sampler -- Christmas Angel -- Mum's Xmas Stitch -- Christmas decs 3 & 4 -- Xmas Bird ---- Snowflake Sonata -- Be Jolly -- JE Unicorn -- Start HAED!!! --0 -
Am loving the blackwork pics that people are posting, they look so clean and crisp, dont know if I could manage that, lol. May give it a try in the future though.
Am three weeks into my christmas snowmen banner and loving it so far, havent managed to do as much s i wanted due to work but really enjoying it. Aim is to do it for 20.12.2012, earlier if possible (fingers crossed).
I'm waiting for my order from the Uk historicalsampler company, cos i've found out that a colleague is having a baby and i've ordered the boy sampler, so hoping she has a boy, lol. Otherwise i'll have to just order the girl sampler
Question: does anyone get cross stitch magazines on the ipad??? the mags are sooooo expensive here (Australia), anywhere from $14-17 here and I could get a 3mnth subscription for the price of one paperform one here. Just wanted reviews before i buy.
Keep on sewing ladies!!!0 -

That is beautiful Ailsb. I would agree with you and go for Infant Jesus.
Sorry leemina can't help with e-versions of mags but no doubt someone will be along with some advice. Good luck with the birth sampler.
Sounds as though you've had a really lovely day sk00bie.
Have a good day everyone,

B_e_g - thanks for the comment. Think I'm going to go for Infant Jesus after all it fits the picture so I won't have to mess with that as well as the wording.
Sk00bie - sounds like you had a lovely day out. Not sure if I've missed it but what Christmas Ornament are you doing? Also thanks for the info on the DMC thread.
Leemina - the only thing about the e-version I would look at is whether you can print the patterns off. If you could then I think I'd invest in it even if it were only for a few months to see how it goes.
Chicky - my hubby went through the Lego Starwars phase, I took it as more stitching time for me. Seriously thought I know it gets frustrating hearing the sound effects if nothing else. I'm about to get my own back on him - I'm looking to buy Zumba II for the xbox (anyone know if it's any good?).
I had the 20% off voucher from Hobbycraft as well. Have printed it off and going to pop down after work tomorrow (if I can squeeze it in before Cubs). Going to get the DMC Metallic thread (if they sell it) and might treat myself to a magazine. Also need some polysterene (sp) balls for Cubs to pin sequins on for Christmas.Cross Stitch Cafe Member #59 :j

Infant Jesus makes the most sense to me, too. What other Christmas related thing begins with 'I'?
Leemina-I had a trial World Of Cross Stitching on the iPad & it's good, but no idea about printing patterns off, because I've never used the iPad for printing. I don't have a wireless printer, so ours is just set up for PC.Cross Stitch Cafe Monthly Challenge Member #27
