Depends what you mean by 'only shop work'. There must be 100 different careers in a supermarkt for example these days - buying, marketing, logistics, r&d, property, legal.... god knows. And you, for example could work towards any of these professions and leave your £100-a-day buddies standing.

You won't of course, you'll still be sitting behind your screen posting nonsense on some forum somewhere in 10 years from now...

True, it is just hard to see a path from shop assistant to those business functions.

A lot of people start out as shop assistants. Many work in shops at the weekends/evenings while at school/college when they are like 16. I did this and so did my 2 brothers and now 2 of us are in pretty good jobs.

Who said you could only do shop work??

What about longer term temping in an office???

Temping is something I am looking at.

The one slight concern that the careers advisor brought up about that was if I was to need to have any disability adjustments that there would be no support in temp jobs given they might be only a few days long.

However, I will just have to make do if temping is the road I go down.

Why are IT and business graduates in a different position to me, why can they earn 100 pound a day straight out of uni with no experience what so ever?

While I think you need to make job applications now, I don't think you need "over-do" it. Quality is more important than quantity - scattergun approaches aren't worth taking when you are supposed to be studying for your final exams. Better customise the applications you do to maximise your chances of interview.

You've received good advice from so many people and you are wasting time in contributing to MSE forums instead of studying. You need some relaxation but get away from MSE for a while. See the friends you mention in earlier posts.

Be assured that people on MSE do wish you well but we are getting tired.

I've made a note to join others now in not responding to your posts - at least I won't until after the end of April.

In the meantime, good luck with your studies and your jobsearch. Bye for now.

Because they know how to do something practical.

(Not that all IT or business grads are actually employable or necessarily any good at working in those industries)

Just trying to make me more upset and depressed are you?

Is that what you are going to say if and when your kids can not find good jobs?

I'd tell them to stop procrastinating and get off their lazy behinds and get a job stacking shelves at Tesco.

ARGH! Basically 'cos they are better than you. Firstly they probably don't have such a negative attitude.

Perhaps they have the skills employers want rather than a lot of experience. Enthusiasm for the job?

Perhaps those with business and IT degrees are more in demand than a philosophy graduate.

so going back 3 or 4 years why did you choose philosophy as a degree, what was the aim, why did you want to do that , what did you hope to be once you left, or was it the one with the lowest entry requirements?

Because it was local, the offer with the highest grades, at the best university I had an offer for.
