Yes i would love to but why should i take a job If it gonna make me worse off?
the rule is, if after working expenses you are worse off you do not have to take the Job.
I asked today, if I were to take a part time job what help if any would I get, I was told anything less than 30 hours I would get no help apart from JSA making up the difference, they allow me to keep the first £5 :j but anything else over that it is taken off me pound for pound.0 -

Does that mean after the extra 78.48 they then have to pay 56.36 in rent and council tax. And what abut the loss f free school dinners and transport costs t work? Just curious here0 -
The Turn2us online benefit calculator is considered reliable. Do a before and after scenario in it. Remember to factor in any child care/transport costs expenses that you meet in employment that you never had before.
A two parent household with kids is only required to work 24 hours per week in order to qualify for Working Tax Credits. It's usually the WTC that makes it worthwhile taking a job compared to being on JSA. Perhaps you can ask your potential employer if they offer a 24 hour job if you find a 30 or 35 hour week doesn't leave you any better off than a shorter working week (you don't have the job yet, I think you'll find they'll have masses of willing applicants!!)
WTC does mean a loss of school meals but packed lunches can be made for well under a pound a day so that's really not a biggy. Switching from a hot school meal to a packed lunch is not child neglect , it's up to you how hot/nutritious you make the lunch (thermos for stew or soup?). You can't expect to get free school meals for the rest of your childrens school lives - free meals are a great 'nice to have' for those on very low incomes but it's hardly a great factor to turn down a job.
At some stage or other, you or your partner will have to take employment or the JSA process will just get harder and harder, including things like weekly or daily signing on, mandatory work placements and so on. Better to control your own destiny and find a job that you like rather than get hounded into placements or forced to apply for mickeymouse cold calling commission based sales jobs.
Look at the proposed council tax changes in your local area from April next year (only applies to England, though). Many on benefits will not get a 100% discount and will have to pay towards their CT. Your council may have published their rules on how they will handle this.0 -

The loss of free school meal would need to be deducted as would any travel expense.
The OP says he children are 3 and 4 so I would guess they are not at school yet, although he did mention it.
When I first went back to work I was £12 a week better off after school meals and travel.0 -
WTC is a bummer. If you qualify for it, you get no school meals, free healthcare etc... and less help with housing and council tax.
It "pretends" to make you better off, and does in cash terms, but the hidden extras make you worse off.0 -

That' s not bad then unless travel costs are stupidly high. Did wonder how it worked0 -

Yes both will be in school. But it's only £9 a week for the one child as she just started full time school. As the youngest is only starting school in the mornings in Oct. As for travelling Argos is just down the end my street (reason for applying so close and with customer service and retail experience) so walking distances. It is only for the Xmas period and am requested to work from 14 Sep -5th January and also to work days 23rd Dec 24th Dec 26th Dec 31st Dec 1st Jan
I have been told i get £250 back work job grant
£40 benefits (In work credit/Return to Work Credit) (I don't think I would)
Extended payments of Housing Benefit and Council Tax Benefit first 4 weeks.
Any that true ?0 -

That's all true:T
You do get £250 back to work. This is to help pay any bills you get before payday .
You will also get your old rent and council tax paid for One month.
You do get £40 a week paid extra for the first year .0
