I've got lots of friends all across the world, and one of them as just given me this tip from when she got marriedI heard about this somewhere and I did it for my wedding; and it worked so well to solve little problems that cropped up before the ceremony!
Get a plastic box with a lid; large shoebox size. Put in it things you will need (or could need in case of an emergency) for the day of the wedding -- masking tape (for the bottom of slippery shoes); sewing kit (we used this is as one of the groomsmen's tuxes had some problem); extra pantyhose; clear nail polish (for runs in hose); extra makeup like lip gloss; plastic drinking straws (sip soda or drinks with so as not to ruin lipstick); chocolate (always good anytime!); Tylenol (headache reliever); antacid or Tums for tummy ache; bandaids, first aids supplies; safety pins; shoe polish; breath mints, etc. Label the top "*YOUR NAMES* Wedding" in big letters and take it with you the day of the wedding. It helps to have all that stuff in one place and to get it all together a bit at a time.
I had to laugh though because when I went to copy what she said, in the pop-up menu it said 'translate to english' :rotfl:Got married on 1st August
thank you to everyone on the weddings and anniversary forum xxx

Getting Married Prague 31st July 2009
I've secretly booked another trip to frankfurt (Ryanair via flightchecker) and just booked accommodation yesterday (via travel supermarket) managed to get a nice room, king size bed and breakfast for £30 per night! (total cost for 4 days £180 for both) i'm planning to tell the groom the morning of our wedding. Ive bought him a little retro toy and im wrapping up the message with that to pass on to the best man! im so excited and cant tell anyone!
Anyway just some more ideas - yesterday i went to the pound shop and got a load of disposable cameras for wedding (ive no photographer - apart from my brother who teaches photography) excellent also for the hen do. going to put return stickers on them (just in case!) got some envelopes (from airport, although they are all over the place) to send pics off cheap (ive used them before and they come out really good)
also bought some glow-sticks (again for hens and the reception) last one i went to, the kids loved making necklaces and bracelets out of them. you get 20 for £1 (also could be used as table decorations)
anyone know of anywhere cheap i could get some helium balloons for the tables at the reception? or of any cheap jewelers as my groom still needs his ring.
also if anyone can help me, im trying to find matching shoes for my bridesmaids (in lilac) and cant find them anywhere (need size 5 and 6) ive tried ebay and shops but cant find any lilac anywhere! Now living within my means!0 -
Can anyone give me some ideas on homemade / cheap favours / gifts please?
Yes! its sounds silly but if you go on ebay and search for wedding favours you get an extensive selection and most of them you can make yourself.
as im getting married abroad we decided to use the cake as favours - i bought cake boxes and decorated them and inside we are going to put little party favours, bubbles and sweeties (lovehearts) (it would have been chocolates but we worry they will melt) we thought our guests would love to regress to childhood after the ceremony! also thinking about maybe a lucky dip lotto in them or a nice quote about friendship. charity shops are great for favours too -some have very nice jewelry and i picked up some cufflinks for £1 recently. my mum is also making some fasinators for my bridesmaids which they can keep, and also little bracelets (for the ceremony and after) you can buy beads and things quite cheaply on ebay too. hope this helpsNow living within my means!0 -

Hello everyone
I wanted to introduce myself (and also tag the thread so I can find it later).
We haven't got a set date yet-but in October we will have been engaged for 3 years (and together mostly on and sometimes off, for 9 years) Our story is VERY long and full of "things" but the short of it was we were introduced by his best friend whom I dated for a few months (in South Africa) and after lots ofv ups and downs he decided to move to the UK to try and start afresh (both our parents are from here), I met someone and had a baby and he left me when DS was a few weeks old. DF heard about it, came back to SA to propose to me...
I am turning 30 in July and next month we are moving into the first house we have ever shared together (as apposed to a very small flat) so we're toying with the idea of having our pastor marry us now and then just "announce it" at a do we have planned to celebrate my do and the house move. Both of our parents live in SA so they would miss it-But I think we've all made peace with that.
The other plan is to have a wedding, but since we dont have any savings it would be a while. I've done most of the planning on paper really-and a bit of actual stuff. We had chosen the theme "mad hatters tea party" . I have bought my dress material and have started doing my mock up (Im making my own dress as my mum was a dressmaker and I think I learned enough to cope) Im also making my own cake and have started doing the flowers for the cake. I am a cake decorator and thought I'd do only one tier in cake and the rest dummies. That way close to the day I only have to bake a cuttiing cake and the ho;e process should be relatively stress free. I'd like to have a "high tea" so that catering is also just various cakes and savoury bites. I have friends who have offered to help me with these and obviously because of the business I have fridges etc to store the stuff ahead of time. I've been collecting random pieces of crockery from charity shops and freecycle. So far we have spent about £30, and I have 20 plates, 20 wine glasses, 3 cake stands, two tea sets (serves 6 each), 2 trifle sets and 18 dessert glasses.
I've been looking at rings on amazon because I just won 4000 piggy points. That means I can afford to spend a bit more on my ring-Im just not sure about Amazon fr jewellery? Any opinions? My engagement ring was bought in south africa-9ct white gold band with 9 diamonds inset (Im not sure how big though) so I just want something plain and pretty to go with it.
I'm looking forward to catching up on past posts here and hearing your opinions on my ideas so far.0 -

Just on the topic of iPod playlists...I'm doing this for our reception, but my sister and BIL went to a wedding recently where they did this and it ended up being really disjointed cos the songs that were playing after each other didn't go. I'm going to sort mine out so that they flow a bit better (slower ones at the beginning of the night working up in tempo for when people are dancing) and then play it while I'm, I dunno, doing the housework, to listen to whether they do flow right or not. Plus, if you've downloaded any tracks from anywhere other than say iTunes, just might be worth checking the quality of the tracks as it will really be obvious when they're played through a PA system if it's less than v good/perfect quality.
HTH
We also plan to do this...and have written a little piece to go on the RSVP card so that we play a range of music everyone enjoys:
"Music is our second love so please take note of the lines above.
We ask that you fill in the blanks so that with songs we can give thanks.
And in this way each guest is pleased with music that brings back memories.
Don't forget to return this note so that we can play the tunes which float your boat"

Hi - have been reading this blog for about a year (no kidding) its been invaluable whilst trying to arrange a money saving wedding. My problem is that I cannot find a shop anywhere near where either myself or my parents live, which stocks sample wedding gowns above a 12?!
I live in Sheffield, and my parents North London, and I travel between the two often. I am around a size 18 in bridal gowns. Im hoping someone could give me some advice as Im losing all confidence with it now. Every shop I have set foot in has been either really rude and/or have tiny samples. I have been left in my underwear on the shop floor in some cases! I have been sneered at by moody shop assistants who cant be bothered to even try to help me into dresses, some just held dresses against me or put the dress on and left it gaping at the back!
Am I the only one who is really frustrated with stroppy shop assistants/owners?!
Sorry not really a money saving question but is driving me nuts!!
Thanks in advance x0 -
You could try a trip up to manchester. Its a little out of the way but not that bad (my brother makes the trip often) I live in stockport and there are some nice bridal shops about. You could try the oxfam bridal shops, or I was looking in a charity shop in cheadle a couple of weeks ago, they stock some lovely dresses (many in your size if i remember correctly) and they are lovely people. I can't remember what charity shop it was off the top of my head, but you could PM me if you want to make the day trip.0

I thought of a nice idea for a slightly alternative wedding.
For the wedding favours you could get lots of string and tie a knot in it... add a little tag like
"Mr & Mrs Smith tie the Knot August 2010"
Thought it would make a nice little favour... I'd use it, but my wedding is very traditional.
Also... I think People should really consider what they are buying before clicking the bid button on ebay!! Looking at some of the rose petals just then, most of them are 99p + £1.99p&p at least - I have bought boxes full from the pound shop before. Try shopping around, true MSE style... You may find a better deal!
