M&S are currently doing a 3 for 2 on wedding cakes.
Hope this helps someone!0 -
I got married in February and managed to save LOADS of money by making a lots of things myself. Here are a few things that I did - I hope they help someone!!!!
1. My mum made our cake - we actually had indiviual cakes (1/2 were choc, 1/2 were lemon....yummy:D ) and we served these in the evening instead of buffet/late night snack. Our wedding was at 1pm and dinner at 4pm so we served this at about 9pm and it went down a treat!! We cut it after dinner though to follow tradition! This saved a fortune in cake and evening food. I bought the stand from ebay!
2. I made all the stationary including invitations, RSVP cards, orders of services, and also a joining booklet with accomodation details and maps. It took ages (I started about 5 months before the wedding!) but saved a fortune! I bought all the paper and materials for less than £100 and i got loads of compliments that they were so personal.
3. Luckily both my dad and husband work in the motor industry so we got the cars for free and got friends to drive them!
4. I really cut back on flowers and think this is a great place to save money. We used candles instead on the tables and the only displays I got (other than my bouquet) were in the church and I didn't even notice them!!!!! Candles are more atmospheric and they are so cheap!
5. My biggest spend was on my dress and although I love it and it's amazing, I wish I hadn't spent as much on it. I've recently seen some AMAZING dresses in Monsoon which I would have been happy with. It seemed so important at the time to have the "perfect" dress but looking back I put too much emphasis on it and I wish that I'd saved my money.
6. As favours, I made envelopes and put lottery tickets in them!! I was the only person who won anything though but everyone thought it was a lovely idea.
7. My biggest money saver though was time!! We were engaged for about a year and I managed to shop really wisely in the time taking advantages of sales and travelling further afield to find a bargain!
I hope these tips help someone - most important thing to do though is to not worry about the little things and take a step back in the evening with your new husband/wife and look at what you've organised. You'll be so proud!!May the fleas of a thousand camels infest the crotch of the person who screws up your day and may their arms be too short to scratch...:D0 -
Oh My God I have made it! I have read every post and looked at many of the links and I have picked up some great tips. Thanks!
I am getting married May 07 and have to do it on a totally tight budget but I think with all the advice I can do it really elegantly. Just like waterlilyann I am making a lot of my own stuff. I have always been quite creative and love making cards etc...I think the most simple weddings can be the most elegant and it's the love and thoughtfulness of friends and family that makes the day enjoyable.
I am getting married in my village church which is set in the most beautiful setting- just a stones throw from the lake. The decor for inside will be 2 bay trees decorated with ribbon either side of the alter (New house so we need living plants we can re use for our garden!). For each of the church windows I am decorating 3 church candles with silver craft wire which will be threaded with a few clear beads and burgandy calla lillies (which is the theme for my day). The pews will have homemade willow hearts and I'll be walking down the aslie with the happiest smile on my face because i'll have my dad on my arm and I'll be walking towards the man that I love.
I had a nervous breakdown last year so I really don't want the stress of a big wedding so we will invite everyone to the church and 30 guests for canepes and afternoon tea at the village hall. I am getting my wedding cake from Marks and spencers and placing 3 lilies as decor around each tier. Actually the nibbles will come from M&S too!!
The hall looks lovely when all of the drapes are in place and I want to put candles as centrepieces (from the church!) I'll scatter some coloured rose pettals on the tables with round bowls of sweets too. The dress I intend to get from ebay/ BHS also grooms suit with cravat etc... from BHS. My bridesmaid (my bestest ever friend) will wear something pretty and look her usual gorgeous self. My bouquet and buttonholes I will get from the florist. As for the favours I'm giving everyone who comes to the church a pretty envelope with wild flower seeds in just to say thanks for coming to see us get wed. I've booked the photographer for £300 and I think that's it. Well we hope to do all of this including platinum engagement ring and platinum wedding rings and a honeymoon for £4000. I'll keep you posted as to how i get on!
All the best to all who are due to marry and are planning- Don't get stressed- step back from it all and think about what's important to you!0 -
I'm getting married this Saturday, Really pooing myself, think the speech is the bit I'm worried about the most as im quite shy.
The amount of plaining and preparation is unreal, though the misses keeps moaning i don't do anything! still, I'm sure it will be worth it all in the end.
Good luck to everyone getting married, you'll get though it!0 -
I paid some of the church costs for the wedding party who used the church the day before us and in return they left their flowers in the church!! The flowers were magnificent and I think we paid £70. We thanked them profusely!! Then in our marquee I collected as many little vases as I could find and put one on the centre of each table which I filled with sweet peas from my garden. They looked stunning. I was also told that bunches of cow parsley in water jugs looks lovely. The only flowers I paid for were my bouquet, the bridesmaids' and the buttonholes.
Happy days!!
