I don't understand the magnolia obsession. If you want something that won't offend anyone and that makes a room look as light as possible, then surely WHITE is the answer??

I think white would make the room look too clinical, a bit cold

I'm doing up my house for resale in a yr or 2, doing most the walls magnolia, but a chimney breast in one room red and purple in another and the kitchen green, but will keep both bathrooms all white.

mostly neutural but a bit colour too

That was my thinking too. However, white is now very popular, among the trendy Sunday magazine types anyway. :)

  • We painted our living room white and i found it got dirty looking very quickly especially the wall where the tv was, mostly near the top of wall.
I have just painted it magnolia as i think that looks cleaner for longer.

Two problems I see with pure white: a) the UK is generally too cold/dim for it to work well ie it looks too cold and b) it works best in perfect modernist architecture and I think shows up the imperfections in the average house.

I would avoid the white v magnolia argument entirely and use an off white.

An ivory, for example, is cleaner and brighter than magnolia, but less stark and harsh than pure white.

If the choice really is between the two above, white would win for me!

Surely some people do like a nice house. I saw several houses bought cheap, and refurbished sell at high prices. I also saw the same, but refurbished with a cheap carpet and kitchen, not sell at high prices.
You are correct as a cheap job just puts people off
Knock £5K off the price, eh? What's going on upstairs in Keystone-land then? The cost to paint my house, covering paints and tools but own labour, was the best part of £1,000.
What's going on upstairs in Leify land then? What did your own labour cost and don't say nothing because it did - your time is as valuable as anybody elses. Your hourly rate x the number of hours you spent = £££. This is where the "buy materials and do it myself because its cheaper" theory so often falls flat on its backside in cost comparison.

It doesn't have to be £5k. But it needs to be a decent incentive to attract a buyer in current condition.

    Cheers

Paint it in any neutral Farrow and Ball paint with a daft name and tenants will love it. Mouse's Back anyone ?

What is it with paint colour names? I've never seen a magnolia flower in any colour remotely like the magnolia paint, let alone Mouse's Back!

Well,I quite enjoyed painting. From what I have seen the way you sell a house is put it on the market at a silly price, then each month reduce the price to a more sensible level, when people start biting. Or keep it fairly high until you get offers, if you can wait. The nice ones did sell at silly prices, always amazed me how some houses would sell high, others wouldn't. An estate agent said there was no rhyme or reason, and I think he's right.

Probably best to paint if it is a nice house with nice kitchen etc, let down by the walls, and leave it otherwise.

I I would assume that anywhere painted magnolia would have cheap carpets/laminate flooring, cheap fixtures and fittings, cheap everything. I wouldn't want to pay over the odds for a house that looked like it had been done up like this on the cheap, simply ahead of a sale.

You wouldn't, but lots of people would.

Especially young first time buyers with no imagination, no taste, and no money left over to do their own decorating.
