Recently had to have a chap in to sort out my computer due to the fact it crashed big time. I am on AOL 9 - broadband - with WinME.
A chap came along and had to wipe everything and start again. Now a week later I have discovered I have no McAfee Anti-Virus which I had previously downloaded via AOL. Plus I had also had an old - 2001 - Trend Micro Pc-Cillin 7.5 which was also wiped.
Basically I am now unable to download McAfee anti-virus - it states that AOL cannot detect this anti-virus on my machine, and for sure it is not coming up in my Control Panel > Add/Delete Programs, although the McAfee Firewall is detected. However, when I try to re-download the anti-virus it states, "Our records show that you are a current subscriber to McAfee VirusScan Online, brought to you by AOL" and will not even let me try to re-download it - the wizard is not coming up.
AOL Help have suggested I make sure that the active X controls are enabled in internet options - done. Then to reset the security to medium - done. Still no joy.
AOL Live Help are passing the buck stating it is not an AOL problem and that I should contact McAfee on an 0906 number which I believe may be a premium rate number - right or wrong?
So where do I go from here? I have no anti-virus - I could re-install the Trend Micro PC-Cillin, but I am not sure if I can update this from Trend, and there seem to be so many versions for this and that, that I am not even sure which one to pick.
HELP!

Simple answer ...
Get AVG 7 (Antivirus- FREE)
& Zone Alarm (Firewall -Free).
Hope that helps.

Many thanks Spikey for your suggestions.
Is anyone able to answer the original questions though?0 -
Hi there Mr Skint - thanks for your response.
This chap did certainly seem to know what he was doing, but he had to wipe everything due to the fact that every time I tried to boot up, it would just hang. There was no way around it, according to him, without having to spend a megga amount of time doing it. I agreed to him wiping the whole thing clean, as most of what I do is saved to disk anyway.
I seem to remember thinking that he had put the Trend Micro PC-cillin back on, as when it started up it would make a loud thunder-crack! However, it suddenly occurred to me that this was not on, so what happened I am not sure.
As regards the link you gave me, I did find the free download right at the bottom, and will take a look when I get a little more time.
I have to say that you folks out there are wonderful for trying to help!0 -
Did you explicitly contract the guy (either in writing or verbally) to restore your pc to working order in it's last known software configuration?
If you did he's in default and you should seek legal advice.
If it were a plumber who'd botched a repair on your heating I'm sure you'd know what course of action to take. Just because it's a computer doesn't mean it's any different when you are contracting for an expected level of service.

KrazyFool - Yes it is provided free with AOL - however, at AOL dial-up my system is stating that it does not recognise that I have anti-virus software, BUT when I try to re-download the software it is stating that I already have it installed, although I cannot find it on my machine.0
