I didn't say Mildred should expect her child to believe it, just to warn them that other kids do! Sheesh. I wasn't having a go at anyone.Mum of several with a twisted sense of humour and a laundry obsession

It's a pretty illogical fable, same as the "Easter bunny rabbit". It's kind of patronising to assume Children just believe such idiocy.
I think they've just chosen to believe all the other children, media, school etc rather than the lone one or 2 voices telling them otherwise.
Most religions are pretty illogical/ idiotic but plenty of people believe that.People seem not to see that their opinion of the world is also a confession of character.

My 5 year old wants a puppy for Christmas (for the third year running).
She's not getting one either.
Sometimes children want things that are not appropriate for their age. It's up to us as parents as reasonable adults to say "no".
I feel sorry for her as she's obsessed with getting a puppy. My thoughts are though that she can have one when she's old enough and responsible enough to afford and look after her own.
She'll be getting a Christmas present of my choosing. But i can promise you, when she opens it, any thoughts of puppies will go out the window (for this year at least)."One day I realised that when you are lying in your grave, it's no good saying, "I was too shy, too frightened."
Because by then you've blown your chances. That's it."0 -
I bought my DS a leapad last christmas and it's rubbish he never plays on it, the games are expensive and boring and it's quite hard to use. He plays on my BF's Iphone more. I think I shall be ebaying it soon.0

A few comments:
My son has an iPod touch, which he loves - much cheaper than an iPad and can run most of the same apps.
There is likely to be an announcement on sept 12th about the new Apple releases, and an iPad Mini is strongly rumoured. This will be a 7" tablet and will be cheaper - so I'd hold off for a few weeks before making any decisions.
Also, the Nexus 7 is meant to be excellent and is worth considering. And eventually the Kindle Fire will make it to the UK. Both of these are cheaper than the iPad.
Having said all the above, I have an iPad (original version) and hubby has a new iPad, and we love them. However, for me it would be too expensive a thing to buy for a pre-teen, particularly one who will still be in the early stages of learning to read.0 -
Im considering buying my DH an ipad for his birthday, but decided that its pretty expensive for a birthday or xmas present (and hes 28
) so we will save up for it/take it out our next paycheques together, and buy it when we see a good deal etc.
But for a 6 year old?? wth? Whats he going to want next year - an apple mac? When hes ten - a flat? It can only go downhill!
If you really want an ipad I would suggest buying it as a family xmas present, something new for everyone to share. And that way he cant be on it 24/7.0 -

When we got my Ds his we got this...oh what are you going to get him next year to top it. We'll see what he wants and what we can afford. Presents don't have to get bigger every year - when he was about 8 he got a psp, the following year he jut wanted a game for it...one year we got him (he didn't ask for) a laptop then for christmas he only wanted trainers and headphones.People seem not to see that their opinion of the world is also a confession of character.

Tbh, I'd suggest an iPod Touch instead of an iPad. Myself and a friend both have 5 year olds. We have an iPod Touch and they have an iPad. I think the iPod is an easier size to handle and more "drop resistant" (Lord knows how many times my kids have dropped iPods, Macbooks, etc). Yes, the screen is a lot smaller but most of the apps are the same and, assuming good eyesight, can be used just as easily.
If you go for the iPad, I'd suggest getting a tough, shock-absorbent case for it. And, regardless of iPad or iPod, be prepared for lots of sticky fingerprints and multiple screen scratches. It's only cosmetic, so don't stress over it.It takes quite a lot to really damage these things!

My 5 year old (will be 6 by Christmas) is getting one of these:

I thought it would be better than an innotab/leappad thingy as he can do more on it. He is very good as using the ipad, but I wouldn't consider getting him his own one yet.
The main plus with the above one is that it is Flash compatible, so can play cbeebies, moshi monsters (not that he plays that one) whereas the ipad doesn't. And the price isn't bad either.
A friend of mine on fb bought one as well, has trialled it to see what works, and she thinks it's fab. About 20 of us have now got them for our little ones.
I have bought similar for my 11 year old. I've also bought a memory card to go with it so I can download movies/music etc onto it for him.
My own personal view is that a 6 year old is far too young for an ipad0 -
Also ipads/computers are quite addictive. Many people can't wait to get online. Do you want a 6 years old perhaps being addicted to being online?
Would it be wise of a brain that is developing?0
