If I had a pound for every christmas present thread that ended up with harsh judgement over another person's choice of purchase (or not) for their child, I could....... buy an ipad!

All we need now is someone to say they got a tangerine and a walnut and were grateful for it and we are complete.

OP does actually say she thinks it's not appropriate, I forgot that bit.

When mine was 4 (I think) I had this discussion about a DS. In the end I got the more child friendly v-smile console instead. It was very difficult to use, and just frustrated him. It's rarely been played with - I should have gone for the DS.

Surely at the age of 6 he still believes in Father Christmas? FC doesn't give money, not to 6 year olds, surely?

If it's what he desperately wants then a cheap alternative would be better than money.

The OP may not have peddled that particular lie. ;)

    (We certainly don't intend to.)

Mildred you should probably tell your LO it might be best not to explain that to other kids or they'll be very unpopular through no fault of their own :o

We have recently purchased a refurbished IPad2 from the Apple store for the whole family to use and I must admit I am really impressed with it. Some of the educational applications you can purchase are very reasonable and fab learning tools.

My children are secondary school age, but a friend who as a 6 year old son with special needs purchased an ipad as they use ipads in the specialist school he attends and the educational applications he uses are really good.

She recommended a Griffin military style protection case for the ipad to us for our own ipad (which we got off Amazon for about £24), as her six year old is not very careful with it and with the case she did not have to worry about him damaging it. We got the case and although our children are older, we are impressed with the protection it offers, especially for the screen. I would recommend you get the case if you do purchase one that you plan to let your son use. I would also restrict the purchase of applications on the ipad before letting him use it, so he does not run up a bill by clicking on applications you have to pay for.

Or of course like my dd and my friend's ds - they might just decide to believe regardless of what they are told.

I've had all the lectures, threats and warnings on other threads, thanks.

We bought a Griffin case for my son's iPad and it certainly removes any worries about it being damaged (he is 19 and has autism and a learning disability). It does make it bulkier and heavier though.

I personally wouldn't buy an iPad for a 6 year old, just like there is no way our 15 year old is getting an iPhone , however I do think they are great for the whole family to share.
