Is my router up to it?

You aren't going to be able to download faster than your sync rate, the max you'll get is about 86-90% of sync rate - speedtesters of all type's can be misleading.!!

I have tried this speed test and it's 1.33 and .32.
The reason it's got slower is talktalk have answered my plea
and asked me to alter the MTU from 1458 to1432 and it have slowed down.0 -
If you plug the router into the test socket, what is the download sync speed? is it consistent if you reboot the router?
is there any noise on the line?
how old is the house/phone wiring?
speedtests can vary at different times of the day.
does iplayer actually not work, or just stall!!

Interestingly I am also with Talktalk. Accepted I was a long way from the exchange ( 5.97 Km) and speed of 1 meg was as good as it gets. I had already installed wall mounted filter, shielded cables and swapped their Huwai router for a netgear.
Contract came up for renewal, said I was not happy with speed and thinking of moving. They sent out an engineer yesterday free of charge ( goodwill, normally £50). He agreed I had done everything then tried a new router they have on trial. Speed immediately jumped to 1.4meg and has remained there. May not be the fastest broadband in the world but all credit to them they are now achieving the theoretical maximum.
Moral - whilst Talktalk do get slated give them a chance, whenever I have needed help a sensible calm discussion has sorted things out quickly and efficiently.0 -
closed mate, I have provided the links for the op to check/optimise their internal setup, they are adamant it's all good....line attenuation of 64dB is the main problem

Here they are.
Downstream 1846kpbs
64.0 db
11.2db
Upstream 351kpbs
37.8----11.6db
OP, based on the above stats your line is capable of getting >2 meg. Ask on the TT forums to put you on a 6db snr profile because you are still on TT's default of 12db snr (noise margin). With a 6db snr you should get at least 2.5 meg on the above stats but just in case you start getting disconnections on a 6db profile (due to your line length) then ask to to be put on a 9db profile...this should give you 2-2.5 meg speeds.0 -
Thanks, this all sounding a bit more encouraging.0

This may work, however on such a long line caution needs to be exercised, but I would be dubious as to whether a reliable >2meg sync could be attained. It would be easier if the OP has a router which is compatible with DMT and/or RouterStats to tweak the snrm themselves to see if this approach would give any benefits-also it's immediate effect and correction if it's too much, whereas doing it via the forums with it's inevitable time delay could leave the OP with an unstable/unuseable connection for a few days whilst the profile is altered back again. I say this as last time I asked, TT support wouldn't alter line profiles over the phone unless there was a fault
edit:- just checked, and it's an 834PN, so should work with DMT. Sweeny, look here, you need version 8.07 - download and SAVE to desktop before running....

It might also be worth checking that you are on the latest firmware for your router.0
