How much was given to buy the second house? And how much does your OH want to give/lend now?
  • "MIL has 2 businesses as well as other properties".

Note the "properties" plural. She has no need to lend anything from you and your husband. It sounds like she has plenty of assets of her own.

I'd be asking my husband why we would need to very likely compromise our own future financial security for someone who doesn't appear to know how to run their own life properly

If it was just a one-off then I would be happy to lend/gift my parents or in-laws money - but it sounds like it's an ongoing problem of her living beyond her means. If you lend it to her this time then she's going to carry on exactly as she is and probably come back to you next year with the same problems asking for more money - where do you draw the line?

I think your OH does need to have a talk with her - possibly add in the fact that you're thinking about trying next year and need your savings for that, the thought of being granny might soften her up a bit! Could you offer her practical help/advice on budgeting and the business instead - or is she not the type to take it?
