Whereabouts are you? I thought all schools were open so many days per year so children would be off the same amount of time though it might be allocated differently? I can see that may not be the case if you are outside the U.K, though hubby's cousins in Canada still had the same amount of time off, just it was given as 2 weeks xmas, 1 week spring, a couple of long weekends and all the rest of the time off together in summer. I looked up my kids school calendar for the next academic year and taking bank hols and inset days into account. The only month they are there for the whole of the month is March and that's only due to the way Easter hols fall in 2013.
We're in Ayrshire, have just looked at the next years school calendar, and we have:-
21st - 24th September
13-22 October
21st December - 6th January
8th - 12th February
28th March - 14th April
6th May
24th - 28th May
and then break up for summer on 27th June.
According to the council website they've got 190 days at school this year, with 66 holidays and 5 inset days.
I think we get about the same amount of days off as the English kids, it's just we have the one huge holiday, and then our others are a little shorter or something.
Apparantly, it all goes back to the days when the farmers needed all hands on deck for harvest time, or so I was told a couple of years ago, the Scottish harvest is earlier and more spread out than the English due to crops and weather or something or other (I have to confess I'd glazed over by then:embarasse)0 -
There is no comparaison that it is much much easier to look after them then it is to deal with a working/school week. Yes, sometimes, I get annoyed when I hear SAHM going on about how hard it is. Saying that, that's when kids are at school, because looking after young children is also completely draining, especially when they don't sleep well at night.
I wouldn't agree with that - I go to work for a rest!! Obviously it's easier when they are at school, but after taking the first two weeks of the school holidays off I was glad to go back to work! I love them to bits, and my job's no walk in the park, but I find it hard going. At least they entertain each other to a degree, until the bickering creeps in, afew of my friends only have the one child and they find it very difficult to have to constantly entertain and have been glad when one of mine has been over to play.

Having seen this recently in Wilko's Wolverhampton, I'd be worried about what they're teaching the little 'uns........

Back to school indeed. Don't know what I'm doing, but doing it anyway... :huh:0 -

That prompted me to check (just to also depress myself as to when half term is
) and ours are in for 195 days, although that only includes 2 inset days. I'm sure I didn't dream that from this September, schools in Wales are only allowed a total of 5 inset days per school year, so that's an extra three on top of what's listed.

On reflection from when I first wrote this thread (I was feeling a tad premenstrual
) I am feeling a bit sad now that tomorrow is their last day. They do work so hard in the year and rarely have any days off so they deserve to have a good chill out come the holidays. I am feeling a bit sad cos the next time they have another summer holiday they will be that much older
They grow up so fast, sometimes I wish I could hit a pause button so I could pause their age for that bit longer. Raven. :grinheart:grinheart:grinheart0 -
i'll be glad when other peoples kids go back to school.
fed up of the constant noise, and the foul language, plus thay are always on the pavehence, whment with their bikes, scooters and skateboards, and they dont look where they are going, i'm suprised nobody has been hurt.
the majority of parents it seems, at least where i live, dont care what their kids are up to, and prefer them to be playing anywhere where the parents cant see or hear them.loves to knit and crochet for others0 -
Yeeehaaa mine went back today! Celebratory cup of tea and then I will attempt to organise the summer holiday madness that is my house right now!! :-D
