Could I ask for your help please? Is it possible to spend £20 weekly for a family of four when your children will not anything mixed? My ds is autistic and although I am extremely lucky as he will eat most things, but he will not under any circumstances eat spag bol, shepherds pie, cassoroles or anything with the ingredients combined. Also nothing with onions, mushrooms, pulses, peppers, potatoes, beans, sprouts, offal, any soup (other than tomato) or spicy foods.
He loves his fruit and most vegetables.
If anyone can produce a menu with these restrictions for £20 I would be very very happy! :-)Full time Carer for Mum; harassed mother of three;loving & loved by two 4-legged babies.

Just a suggestion, but you could still make the eg. shepherds pie, for the rest of the family, & cook the ingredients for your son separately. It may be worth investing in one of those saucepans that has three or four compartments inside to help cut down the fuel costs, something like this or this.
Or you could use foil and put his separate portions in little foil packages but all in the one pan.0 -
I bought 1kg of lean mince for £5 and have made 3 x2 person portions of bolognaise and 2 x2 person portions of mince and veg for the freezer for my boys.....chuffed with myself for actually getting round to doing it instead of leaving leftovers in the fridge and forgetting them!
So I'm counting that as 50p per person as I already had the veg, stock, tomatoes, herbs, garlic, onions etc.0 -

Well done, my freezer broke yesterday so i've spent ages cooking stuff up and have def decided batch cooking ins't for me.
If it's a choice to buy more expensive mince all well and good but i just wanted to point out that value mince is £2.89 (it's went up by £1 in a year:mad:) for 800g so if your really struggling 2 packets of that would be more value for your money altho slightly more money.DEC GC £463.67/£450

Thank you quintwins, yeah I did look at the price but there's just something stopping me going for the value mince so I try to go for mid price...
I'm a vegetarian and don't like to spend too long browsing the meat aisle or I start to feel a bit quesy! :rotfl:0 -

oh dear, i look at it this way all my mince dishes are more or less half veg, for savory mince i addonions, carrots, peas and sweetcorn, for spag bol i make my town sauce so tomatoes (both tinned/passtata and fresh) onions, peppers, peas and sweetcorn so for all the meat they acually get abit moe fat doesn't matter. i bought some mid level mince awhile back from tesco when it was bogof it worked out cheaper than value but it was horrible really scummy and grisly i never get this with my value mince, but i'd never buy frozen thats a step to far for me so i know where your coming from.DEC GC £463.67/£450

You should only include a maximum of 1-2 portions of fruit/juice per day. The rest should come from a variety of vegetables, making sure to include lots of colourful and green leafy veg, not just the starchy varieties.
I don't like to sound like a fuss pot but here goes.
There are children who drink vast amounts of fizzy drinks and have sweets, crisps, biscuits and burgers most days. These are the major risk factors in diabetes statistics.I count a couple of extra portions of fruit per day in this post....for hungry children this is hardly a major issue in an otherwise balanced diet.0
