I had this problem and managed to fix it without a reinstall.
Create the disc at https://www.ubcd4win.com on a good pc and boot off of it on the bad one. Once in go to Start, Programs, Registry Tools, Registry Restore Wizard. Tell it where Windows is installed (C:\Windows usually). Then pick the date that you want to roll back to. I chose the one closest to todays date and it recovered it fine. Reboot and bingo! It's back. (Well it was for me...!)
    Hope this helps someone!

just downloaded this and onto cd and it does not work says setup is restarting for a few seconds then goes to the black screen again with that message what now this is driving me mad,it must be a hell of a bad virus to get this much hassle

well i have not got any further with my computer,so unless i get a fix on here i might need to get someone to look out as spent most of the day trying to get it ok again with no luck.

But i have another problem i am not having much luck lately,my laptop is new well a year or more old not used it apaprt from a couple of times, well i did know back then when booting up sometimes worked and sometimes not but now i see this can be a problem as i have used it more.

I get the message telling me my time and date is wrong at boot up now whats happening there and how can it be fixed,if i go and change it pressing f10 its changed and saved but when computeris shut down and is started again its back to same dates etc and needs sorted, some times it loads up ok and other times i does not.

help needed once again,i really dont want to loose my pc and info on this laptop what happening to me,i have never had so many problems

re laptop, you probably need a new bios battery

As for the PC, try creating a bartpe disk, with the lastest mcafee stinger plugin, and then boot the PC with the CD and run stinger, just to check whether you have a worm

Assuming not, then you should be able to manually copy your old registry files over the top of the existing ones, which may help with your problem

well i gave up in the end, tried lots of stuff and was getting very little feedback while online on here to solve it anything on here that was said did not help, but thanks anyway it was free advice.
But i ended just putting it to the guy that fixes computers and he is saving my pics i wanted saved and a few other stuff but the likes of programmes these will be lost and also my aol and all the old emails and favourites on it which i am gutted about as had many on there which some i will never remember again.
But what ever i downloaded from microsoft i think was the problem,he could not tell me but he thinks it was cause what ever i downloaded was too new for my xp as i not got any service pack in and tells me if i had them installed maybe this all would have been better,i asked if it was a virus he did not think so,well he said that what ever was wrong i destroyed a important file,so guys if your not doing so please back up.
I keep saying i will do it over and over but never do,this probably 3 times over many years i have lost a lot of info maybe i will learn someday.

As for the latop top thats what i read about the battery maybe needing replaced he reckons its not that cause the laptop is new and only been used a couple of times,he reckons having it sitting about for a while not being used maybe is a cause but he did not know as not looked at that one yet,i sure am have bad luck on these things.
Am i save to keep using my laptop with this problem as the only thing i have at present as he has my computer for now.

Well he shouldn't have to reinstall to fix it, and the battery is the thing that holds the date.

Buy a copy of norton ghost in future, and backup to DVD, then you won't lose a thing if it goes pear shaped.
