In which case boot from your XP CD, go into the Recovery Console and run Chkdsk.

come on guys must be someone on here thats got the answers to my problems,to me its the worst pc problem i had well for one to get back working again and my last resort is to go back to pc factory settings as too much info to loose etcTreat everyday as your last one on earth! and one day you will be right.0

i boot disc from dvd drive it comes through a process and i have welcome to set up with optons of setup windows now,repair using recovery console and quit.
i then get to screen recovery console with:
1:c:windows
asking which windows installation i would like to log onto,i have no idea it says to cancel press enter which i have done in passed and this not work but what do i do from here??Treat everyday as your last one on earth! and one day you will be right.0 -

well i tried my luck and pressed 1 not sure if right number,how do you know what number,asks type admin password dont thinki got one i neve put one in when logging on to xp,well i have c:\windows>and enter chkdsk/p and get command not regognised typehelp for list.

when i put in chkdsk and nothing else somethng happened and said volume appears to be in good condition and was not checked use /p if i want to check volume when i do it says command not recognized so what now,this sure is a nightmare of a problem but worth it ifi get it back working again.Treat everyday as your last one on earth! and one day you will be right.0

if that doesn't work..
chkdsk /?
what does it bring up?
