Car dumped by me ~ landlord not interested

I live in a leasehold flat with a private car park with around 12 designated (one per flat) parking spaces and 8 visitor spaces. The visitor spaces are seldom all used however for the past 18 months there has been a 'dumped' Honda in one of the visitor spaces. The car was last taxed up to 30.09.10. I emailed the car park management company and basically they have just done nothing so I contacted a firm who advertise on the internet and they offered me £160 for the car - I explained I wasn't after any money but merely wanted the car removed and their response was that as I didn't want paying they would come within 30 minutes with their flat bed, I could sign the necessary paperwork and they would remove immediately. I informed them the car wasn't mine and I was reluctant to sign anything - they said they will come back to me. In the meantime I just wonder how anybody else would/I should proceed.

Well the second company are scrap metal dealers, what you don't want is your name attached to this.

Have you checked, is the car insured/taxed?
I don't mean just the tax disc, as somebody here found out recently, people do forget to change the disc on the windscreen.

You could pay the DVLA a few £ and get the owners details, try to contact them, im sure by now the DVLA will have been doing the same.
If you find out where they live (probably locally) you could get a mate to drag the car out to the front of their house.... If it's on the handbrake, im sure some "vandals" might at some point smash the window in and release it ;)

No car is definitely not used/dumped. Has green mould around window edges etc. Doubt DVLA will contact them as on private land. May live locally (in which case probably not parked/dumped illegally) ~ pointless moving it therefore. Luckily no vandals around where I live and I would think all brakes locked/rusted on by now.

As a starting point I would put a large note on the car stating you will be claiming ownership of the car in 21 days with the intention of having the car removed. Just to see if anyone shows any interest. I would also contact your council about scrap car removal if you are concerned about your legal liabilities.

Although the vehicle is in a private car park and is required to be taxed (or SORN), unfortunately the regulations do not allow it to be removed from that type of location.

If it isnt your space they are parked in then why get involved ?

Leave it to the management company thats what you pay them for, whilst I am not a fan of clampers or PPC's if you have one that looks after the spaces contact them. However if the car is niknakd then they too might not do anything about it because if the car has'nt been registered there will be no one for them to go after to claim their fees back.

Direct Gov suggests you get in touch with the council and reprort is as abandoned, it is then the councils responsibility even if its on private land as it could present a danger to the public. They will do a DVLA search to see if there is an owner, if there isnt then they will dispose of accordingly.

    :)

Sounds like my car. I keep it parked off road but rarely use it. I even get moss growing in the gap between the window rubbers and glass. It is regularly maintained and roadworthy, but cleaning it seem to take a back seat these days.:o

Anyway, back to your problem. If it was my own land I'd get someone to tow it onto the road where it becomes someone else's problem, but it's difficult to see what you can do as a leaseholder, just keep nagging your landlord if it's really bothering you. I don't think the DVLA would give out the registered keepers' details without you being a private parking company, though the car park management company may have more success.
  • OP, without sounding blunt, what is your issue with this car? If you've contacted the landlord about it then you've done your bit, it's taking up one visitor space out of 8 and you say they are seldom used anyway, are any other residents bothered? Why make this your own little personal crusade?
I hate football and do wish people wouldn't keep talking about it like it's the most important thing in the world
