The fact the (total) pay freeze is coupled with an increase in pension from 3.5% to 6.5% is sickening. If that happened to you in the private sector, i doubt you would be very happy.
Ironically, civil servants employed by the home office/border agency have pay progression in their terms and conditions. So while most civil servants haven't got an increase, these others have continues to progress up salary scales.
I work in the public sector and have always paid at least 6.5% contributions and that has now risen to 8%. I know of civil servants paying contributions of less than 3.5% and getting many more benefits that I was ever entitled to so I have very little sympathy when it comes to the rise in pension contributions for civil servants. Likewise I am sure many in the private sector have little sympathy for me.
The reality is if you are under 40 you will never see these pensions as by the time many of us retire the retirement age will have risen to the point we are nearly dead. Not to mention the fact that further legislation changes will result in killing off many of the so-called benefits, I know that my own pension contributions within the next 3 years will likely rise to 11% which will then be average salary based. I am seriously considering dropping out. The unions in this country or next to useless and have no real influence over anything.
The only thing we can hope for is that the UK keeps electing minority governments whose survival depends on NI MPs support through parliament...0 -

Flateric - it's not as black and white as it's made out. Obviously some private sector businesses will have had it very tough but I've seen plenty of friends in the private sector get good payrises and see them out wining and dining on hospitality budgets to a degree I find shocking as a public servant, I wouldn't be happy as one of their shareholders!0 -

I also find it extremely cheeky that from pepper's previous thread she was off for most of the year sick and is expecting a pay increase...
I am off sick because of bullies as managment in my office, and the grievance has gone ahead, because my equal ops person and the union have agreed with me. I am a hard worker, and want to get better, and get back to work. If I had the choice though I would work in the private sector, the civil service is over managed and too many managers sitting doing nothing.....0 -

It has gone through to HR Connect, and they do the investigation, not my equal ops, and I will be taking it further if I don't get some satisfaction from them. I think these threads have got mixed up, are we talking about pay or a grievance.....0

I have a feeling that if the public sector in N Ireland were reduced by 25% and effective working and management procedures were implemented and maintained productivity would not diminish at all.John0

pepper33 Management have made a pay offer for 2012 and 2013 (August in both cases), which will include the £250 for low paid that you refer to. But wonderful NIPSA have not accepted the pay offer, so in answer to your question - no, you will not get a pay rise this month.
Inland Revenue - pay not decided.
DWP - possibly 1% pay rise0 -

pepper33.....I'm really sorry to hear that you've been off sick. I'm sure however that your illness would not have lasted so long if you worked in the private sector and were not on either full or half pay. Unfortunately, your sick pay would have run out long ago and you would have been forced to find another job.0 -
well so be it, I was very ill, suicidal in fact, was suffering trauma, and as for the private sector, you can still bring a greivance against your employer, and get free help from LRA/fAIR employment/Equal Ops, who have already helped me. Did you think that I was off work for fun, as I can honestly tell you that it has left me devastated, financially and healthwise. And I have already been told that if I worked in the private sector I would not get sick pay, my answer is the private sector which I have worked in, would not put up with the management behaviour, as it would be out of business a long time ago.0
