Help with vet costs???

Hi, does anyone know where I can get help with vet costs? Our first time going to the vets today costing us almost £40 and we have to go back again for a check-up for around £30 or more if any other treatment is needed. We are in receipt of benefits.

Thanks!

  • Ask the vet in advance. Our vet is very flexible with payments for people on benefits. They wil lset up payment plans etc. Or ask you to pay 50% up front and then the rest weekly.

You could find a local PDSA/RSPCA centre where you just go and take a seat and wait. Very low cost, but you could be there for the best part of the day.

I hope not, otherwise benefit are too high!
  • thank you for the replies! no I don't have any pet insurance..and to the last poster I hope that wasn't a cheeky dig at me. Unfortunately no PDSAs in my area. Rang around and may be able to get some of the cost back from PetAid.

Why don't you have pet insurance? You shouldn't have a goldfish if you can't afford to look after it.

Most insurance excess' are £50-£100 so for such a small amount you wouldn't be able to claim back much in this case anyway.
However I too am a firm believer in insuring animals!

Hurrah! Another irresponsible pet owner that can't afford vet treatment!

    :T
  • When did everyone become so beeping self rightous on this board?

It used to be nice & friendly.

Of course, I'm sure most of us would advocate having pet insurance - but a nicely worded post about thinking about this for the future would, I'm sure, have more of an impact and maybe get people to take it out, rather than just jumping down the OPs throat .......

As KxMx says, such a small amount is unlikely to be covered by insurance anyway.

OP hope you can get something set up with a local vets - please do think about getting insurance, there are loads of different policies around, with huge variances in cost depending on the level of cover required but the basic ones start from reasonable costs / month.

I've been told by 2 different people that if treatment is over £40 you can fill in the necessary paperwork and get some back off them. But thankyou.

Thank you for the KIND reply.. I think I will look into pet insurance in the future.. I know it's worth it but I guess you just think you'll never need it but better to be safe than sorry.

ps. I'm more likely to listen civilised comments from people like youself rather than people who, like you say 'jump down your throat'. :)
