I have previously kept Eon informed of the situation and have asked them to disconnect the supply to stop them from using it.
Nevertheless, I had only discovered the charge by chance when I extended the lease.
Again I contacted Eon to explain the situation, but also that I wasn't served any thing regards to the charge.
I was told to prove that the tenant lives there.
With no access to the property, I could not obtain any proof other than my original tenancy agreement.
    And now this. A default.
I have never opened an account with them, never signed up to any terms with them, never received any notices from them.
The fact is this is not my debt so surely Eon should chase the tenant and not me.
How can I get these removed?

Tell Eon to remove it. If they don't, get onto the ICO and report them. How did they get hold of your personal details anyway?

    Malc,

If thats the case they report to Equifax they will see I am a pillar of society and I have no problems them doing it at all.

    See posts #59 and #60.

Hopefully you won't fall foul of their incompetence and/or disregard of data protection principles. Many have, but it must be said that Eon are not the worst offenders.
  • If debt reporting and more accurately assessing risks, keeps my bills low, I have no problem with this. However, posts on this board do show the importance of always calling an energy firm with move out/ move in readings and settling accounts correctly :)
Thank you all for helping me make my day by saving money!

I had a tenant who moved out leaving an unpaid energy bill. A debt collection firm wrote to the property. He hadn't even opened an account with the energy firm so the debt was addressed to "the legal owner" of the property i.e. me. I explained to the debt collectors that the tenant was liable for the debt.

They told me to provide a copy of the tenancy agreement. I'm not sure what more you can do to "prove" that there was a tenant at the property than that. Getting proof from elsewhere would be very difficult - most agencies who dealt with the tenant while they were at the property won't release anything about their dealings with them for data protection reasons.
  • My future daughter in law checked credit history today and noticed electorial registration was red . When questioned this it was because she is not registered as she has lithuanian passport and cannot vote because of government policy .however this has effected her credit file when applying for a credit card[ this is what she was told] .has anyone else been rejected for this reason? Has been a british citizen for 12 years aswell.

I have just had change on my Equifax notification.
Eon have logged a new credit account to my record and it's showing 3 months of default.
This is for outstanding arrears left by my previous tenant on a rental property.
They have already registered a charge on my property through land registry.
This tenant has failed to pay me any rent for years and I have not been able to successfully evict him so he has been staying put.
He has now finally left and have just managed gain control

Hello Salina01 and welcome to the Forums.

Sounds like this is being caused by a dispute around who was responsible for the property at certain times. Guessing, but it might be your former tenant is claiming they gave up responsibility before you're saying they did. If they've contacted us and closed their account, we'll have issued a final bill and opened a new account to cover energy usage from that date.

With changes of tenancy, there's often a period in between one tenant moving out and another moving in. Generally, accounts for these interim periods are put down to the legal owner or their agent. I suspect that's what's happened here. The arrears you mention probably refer to this period. Without a forwarding address, we'll have sent bills, reminders etc to the property concerned.

I do understand you told us about your dispute but, if the account was in the name of the tenant at the time you first spoke to us, we wouldn't have been able to do much as it would've been their account. With disputes like this, we usually ask to see a Tenancy Agreement showing the relevant dates. You mention an original agreement. Did the dates of this agreement change?

We've a particular Home Moves team who deal exclusively with this type of thing. If you send all the relevant details including the tenancy agreements to them, they'll be happy to check our bills match the dates stated. The 'contact us' page on our website lets you add attachments to an email and these will be picked up by this team.

If we need to re-bill the account, we can then look at reviewing the information shared with Equifax.

Sorry for all the speculation and if I'm off track. Hope it points you in the right direction.

Thanks MABLE. We've been doing this for quite a time now. There's more information about what we do with your details on our website. It can be found by searching 'using your personal data.'

Hope this is of interest MABLE.

You're right SammenForLivet2. Having these details can save problems further down the line. We've specialist Home Moves teams who deal exclusively with changes of responsibility at properties. Customers moving in or out can use this service. We ask for the relevant dates, meter readings, a forwarding address and landlord details (where applicable).

Totally understand, moving home can be highly stressful and taking meter readings is probably not top of any 'to do' list. To help, we've developed a Home Moves form on our website so customers can give us their details online.

Hope this is of interest SammenForLivet2.

Bringing this old thread back to life.

Checked my Clearscore (Equifax) report and there is my old closed in 2012 account still being reported back to 2013 alongside my opened in 2015 (and ended but not closed and billed due to switching to Iresa !) account. It may be that Equifax / Clearscore have screwed up and somehow linked the reporting of the second account to the old. Not a major problem as it shows all green but should not be happening.
