Alleged Flouting of the Law

I tend to work to the "don't take the p155" rule. For example I would turn a blind eye to someone who starts up an unprofitible business while claiming jobseekers allowance, provided they stop claiming jobseekers as soon as the business is able to actually pay the person a wage.
As for this situation I have a suggestion.
OP should approach the neighbours and tell them a little fib "Hey, my mate's brother works for the council and told me they're going to be sending more traffic wardens to this area, you might want to put that car on your drive so it doesn't get clamped".
Doing this, you come across as someone who just wants to look out for their neighbours wellbeing. If you later still feel the need to report them, it gives you plausible deniability when the car gets clamped or towed, rather than having them thing you did it and retaliating.
If they are decent and reasonable people they should thank you for this advice and deal with the problem, you might also gain some insight into their situation.
If they are nasty people they may well tell you to F off and mind your own business, in which case go ahead and report them.
I generally find that decent and reasonable people are better off resolving disputes and minor transgressions by simple talk rather than instantly resorting to the legal process.0 -
i dont care if its taxed or not, to me thats down to the DVLA to find out.
and even when reported, they couldnt give a to$$ its not like their going to give you high praise and send someone within ten minutes for you to run to the curtains and laugh at it being clamped to give you that good citizen feeling.
i reported a car with no tax insurance mot parked in my street, four months later it was still there, untill they guy sold it on it caused a parking issue everyday. even told the council it was abandoned, they didnt even bother.
so what im saying to you is, Why bother, what will you get out of doing it.
use askmid put the reg in if its insured then personally forget it.0 -
There's ANPR everywhere now, it's a matter of time before they are caught (if indeed they are uninsured).
And, if he is uninsured, in the time we are waiting for him to get caught, he could hit another vehicle/person.I don't understand why people find it so difficult to mind their own business to be honest.
As people who share the road with him (and pay VED), it is our business.0 -

Using your inane sense of logic if I see a house being burgled, people running half-marathons while claiming DLA for being unable to walk, or anything else you are to mention, I should not report it since it doesn't directly involve me.
What a blinkered, frightened person you must be.
Perhaps he's just not a snitch. Most working class people of my generation were brought up not to snitch on each other.
I'd report my neighbour if he was mugging old ladies or killing people but for an out of date tax disc? Never.
I doubt if I'd even notice it. I'm too busy getting on with my own life to sit in all day and spy on the neighbours so I can grass them up to the authorities. Now that's a blinkered and frightened person IMO.Love the animals: God has given them the rudiments of thought and joy untroubled. Do not trouble their joy, don't harrass them, don't deprive them of their happiness.0 -
Not displaying a tax disc isn't really comparable to a burglary is it?The_Black_Sheep wrote: »You could say the same of anyone reporting anything to the police.

:rotfl::rotfl::rotfl: How have you managed to get that from me suggesting people should mind their own business? What a blinkered, frightened person you must be.
I will never understand why people are so keen to snitch, what do you get from it?0 -
As far as i'm concerned, it depends on how much out of date the tax disc is. If it's over a month, then i'll report it because it follows that the car is most likely un-insured as well.
As I said, if I have to pay, then I think everyone else should do as well.PLEASE NOTEMy advice should be used as guidance only. You should always obtain face to face professional advice before taking any action.0 -
I'd be no good in a neighbourhood watch area, I dont check my neighbours tax discs.
What about their tyres, have you checked them? Made sure they're all legal? I'd rather they had no tax than bald tyres to be honest.
Their bins. Checked them? They might like a sherry of an evening. Going out in either of their cars next day whilst still over the limit. Perhaps a wee call to the cops to set up a sting.
Is there any way we could check their TV licence online? AskBBC or something?
All joking aside, the computer knows their car isnt taxed (if it indeed isnt) and the fine will wing it's way to them or whoever has the misfortune to be the registered keeper. It took nearly a year for the wife to get one (wrongly)after trading in a car.
The OP tried to give the impression they were neighbourly and welcoming but I suspect if it hadnt been the tax disc, it would have been something else.0 -
From Dave_C
If it was me, I would check using the links provided up thread. If it was untaxed or uninsured then I would have no hesitation in reporting the car. From Lum
Has the OP actually done the free check on askmid to see if they actually are uninsured yet?
Many Thanks for the number and varied replies.....
I went off air for short while then the car disappeared, then came back again.
I'd either have to pay or break the website rules so nogo.
This is for free and the report states:
Vehicle Status Licence Not Due
So thanks for that - the answer is take no action
It is an 03 plate so not that old .. not that 'Tat' either, I've had older cars in the recent past.
The 'Raff' (manual workers in vans etc) are further down the street, far enough away not to bother us.0 -
So it seems it is taxed - just not displaying the disc then?
What a lot of fuss over nowt!
Glad it has put your mind at rest though.
5t.What if there was no such thing as a rhetorical question?0 -
