Hey guys! I have loooooads of yellow split peas, and no idea what to do with them... I was hoping someone could give me some inspiration??
Can't do soup, as DP managed to give himself food poisoning with split pea soup once, and he can't bring himself to eat it now :rotfl:
So, other than soup, what can I do with the !!!!!!s?? Thanks!Feb GC: £197 :T / £320 Feb £5 a day challenge: £ / £145

Do you like Indian foods - because these are great for making khichri and dals.

or for dals - best place is

or you can use them cooked till soft, mixed with chopped herbs, garlic, feta and rice/cousous and made into little fritter balls for deep frying.

Daal would be my fist go-to idea. the deep fried balls are good too if served with flatbread and salad.0

hello,
we use them for daal fairly often but always mix with other pulses and add hing/asofateida (sp) to reduce wind issues:o
my two favourites are:
Gateux piment- chilli cakes-
soak the split peas in a bowl of water- overnight if you can.
drain and give them a blitz in the food processor- not too fine it's nicer when there are still a few chunky bits
slice up some chives/spring onions and some green chillis- in a pinch dried red will work ok- how much depends on how hot you like things- if not at all just make with out the chillis.
mix all the bits you have chopped with the split pea mixture, add 1/2 teaspoon of salt and 1/2 tsp of turmeric and mix well- form into little balls with your hand and fry until a deep golden colour- best eaten hot- lovely with a bit of fresh bread and salsa!
Or if you have more time you can make Dalpuri- a yummy indian/mauritian flat bread: http://www.mauritiusorchid.com/Mauritius-Food-Recipes/dholl-puri-dhall-pouri/
I have also eaten it in a savoury rice dish the daal is boiled and then mixed with cooked rice- I'm not 100% on the recipe but I think it was then quickly stirfried in a little oil with mustard seeds, onions, ginger, garlic and a pinch of turmeric...
Hope that helps! If you're afraid of the big bad Woolfe....beware of the Mrs!:rotfl:

Can you freeze the daal at all? I have a load of peas as well and I fancy making thisWeight 21/08/12 - 11st 4lb  Target of 10st....

I freeze dal for DS1's packed lunch on a Thursday.
I freeze it without fresh herbs in it - and measure 1/2 cup portions into a silicon muffin tin. When frozen I pop them out and into a ziplock bag. 1 portion does DS1 or me with chapatti or rice and a green veg - but 2 portions does his Grandad IYSWIM.
Cook once - feed him for a whole term (and I get extra Brownie points because its cheap and healthy)
