SC wins hands down over the microwave, but I think 5 1/2 or 6 hours is enough. They were nice and creamy.

I have cooked chana dal a few times and recipe is quite simple. Soak a cup of channa daal in warm water night before you want to cook it, even a couple of hours soaking will do as well. It will almost double in volume on soaking. Put it in a pan put enough water so that the daal is covered in water. Add salt, chilli powder, tumeric powder and Cloves(optional) cinnaman(optional) and one chicken stock cube. Wait for the mixture to come to boil and them lower the heat so that it is just simmering cover the pan and leave it to cook for 30-40 min. If the daal seems too thick add more water at this stage. After 25-30 min feel the daal to see if it is soft but try not to stirr it too much while its cooking otherwise it starts to stick to the base. When it seems soft enough and the thichness seems right too (like the one you have tried) turn the heat off.
Just before serving heat 2-three tbs of cooking oil and a tsp of butter in a small frying pan and add finely chopped onions to it. fry the onions untill they r golden brown, at that stage turn the heat off and add some cumin to the hot onion/oil and pour it alll over your cooked daal. You can add green chillies to the daal while it is cooking if you like it hot.0 -
What they sell as chana dahl in my local shop isn't split peas it is chickpeas. I like the little brown kala chana because I think they have a nicer nuttier flavour but the bigger paler ones are better for houmous.0

AhemWhat I popped on here to say was that I had another try-out with chana dhal, cooked 1 x chana to 2.5 x water in the SC on low for about 10 hours. It mushes easier for hummous that way but you loose a bit of the nuttyness I got when I did an hour on high and 4 on low.

I haven't dared look at that site again. (See my signature!) But burfi is one of the sweetest, loveliest things I've ever tasted. It's like a cross between tablet (Scottish sweetie) and cake. Yum!
Anyway, I bought some split peas. I made purple sprouting broccoli soup and used them as a base:
2 cups of split peas (I didn't soak them.)
2 smallish potatoes, peeled and cubed
large handful of PSB, chopped and washed
1 medium onion, chopped
Vegetable stock to cover
2 cloves of garlic, crushed.
I boiled the split peas in water for about 10 minutes then added everything else, simmered for about half an hour and blitzed. DS complained about the colour (very green) but once he'd tasted it he ate every drop.

At the risk of taking this thread completely OT, when the ingredients are measured in cups, and the ingredient in question is fresh coconut, roughly what is the quantity ratio between a coconut and a cup?Operation Get in Shape

I have seen an American site which says aprox 7 cups of grated coconut from 2 coconuts.
An American cup is 8 fl oz (or half an American pint which is 16 fl oz)0 -
