What to do with dried split peas?

  • Soak them for a couple of hours if you have time. Don't worry if you don't - they'll be fine but just take a little longer to cook. But do rinse them well first or they'll be quite starchy. I make soup with them all the time - some red lentils in it too if you have any, but otherwise I do it just like Elona, with a big dollop of brown sauce too.

There's a good thread on these that I'll look out for you.
May all your dots fall silently to the ground.

  • Dh did the shopping the other week and for some reason bought 'yellow split peas' in a packet  , I've no idea what to use them in but I know they'll just sit in the cupboard until their date is well past and will end up in the bin, which I don't want to happen.

Hope someone can help, ta :o

They will really thicken up a veg soup - make it completely yummy.

You can also use them in curries.

Also, you can cooke them up by boiling with a stock cube and use them with sauteed onion and grated carrot andmushroom, pepper etc Plus seasoning to make veggie burgers. You'll get load s out of them!

Do they need overnight soaking? The packet says so but I fear I will never remember!!

  • I'll add this to the existing thread on split peas, to keep suggestions together.
