Ooooh 6 posts since December and five of them have been Sony/PS3 favourable!!! Why do I feel all creepy-crawly about you!! And why do I feel I hear Sony’s none-too-good PR machine creaking into action?!!!!!.....

Well, of course you can ‘cos I bet you got a free one from Sony!!!!:p

I have never worked for Sony, but I admit I do know people who have in the past. But then again I know people who still work for Microsoft, so I have no real bias in any professional way.
I didn't get a free machine. I pre-ordered. I paid full price like everyone else and picked it up at a time that suited me. Not standing in a queue at midnight when the stupid media (& probably Sony) expected me to.

Again to say Virgin 10% off via NUS or virgin credit card to bring it down to £382.50. Not sure if you can get away with Virgin credit card online for 10% followed by quidco on top.

Not entirely sure why some people seem to hate the PS3 so much - if ain't your cup of tea then no biggy, don't need to go on and on about it.

Also PS3 may be more expensive in the UK compared to Jap/US but then so is the Xbox 360/Wii and pretty much most things that you can think of.

In terms of a price drop, given how much sony lose per machine it is highly unlikely in the short term anyway.

As for the PS2 game compatibility - does it really matter that you can't play some game from 5 years ago that wasn't that good anyway? Most are supported and more are being added, and its still better than the Xbox-Xbox360 step anyway (I've got one of those too).
  • I'd be a bit wound up if I'd queued up in a normal shop, after having pre-ordered a PS3, and then the next day found out that as a PR stunt sony had given away a free 46inch Bravia HD TV to those at the London virgin store, I'd be taking it back and telling sony where to place it. !!!!

I think personally it's taking the you know what, why not give everyone a special gift rather than a select few, in one particular store,
Drat and Double Drat, curse that Mr T excuse for not giving me a refund.

That's quite old hat. Also, I think it was ONLY the Virgin Store in Oxford Street that was opened from 12am because of policing problems. So no-one got p*ssed off.

You miss the point, what I am saying is this type of PR give-away does not assist gamers in general (or even PS3 fans who have gone to launch events throughout the UK), and does little to impress at Sony's attitude to the general consumer. If they wanted to be generous for missing release dates, etc, etc, why not do it across the board by offering an across the board reward, either by a price point closer to the US or perhaps a free game included. Personally I hope that they get a serious kick up the backside, and that the sales are as disappointing here as they are in the US.

    Not exactly.

The quality of the Blu Ray player on the PS3 won't be as good as a quality standalone Blur Ray Player.

Even though I have a fair dis-taste for Sony (although have ps2 & Psp, had ps1 also), I believe that the player capability is pretty good in the PS3 and is fairly comparable to current stand-alone Blu-ray players. The one big thing it does not have is the ability to bring current DVD's up to a higher defintion output (for instance the samsung standalone Blu Ray machine has the facility to bring a normal dvd up to near HD clarity). This is a big point, it is highly unlikely that someone with a large DVD collection is going to be buying them all again in HD / BR, at £20+ a go. As far as I can see at present the HD dvd's are not going to be viable until they sell at close to the price of a normal dvd. Casino Royale DVD ASDA £7 Vs Casino Royale Blu Ray £20+, it simply just isn't worth the extra cash.

I didn't get one but I thought they were generous to giveaway something like that. Maybe you're a bit jealous that you didn't get a TV?
