Overcharged in shop

I was overcharged by a small amount recently (£4.50) - the barcode was incorrect. Unfortunately, the shop closed as I left and as the shop is a fair distance away I rang to see if they could credit the card used. I had purchased a lot of items so it wasn't apparent until I checked the receipt.
They said that a refund was not possible, however they would send vouchers, but minus the postage. Whilst the amount isn't great enough to cause worry or hardship, I trawled through the section on here to see what rights, if any. This kind of situation doesn't seem to be covered, so I wondered if any more knowledgeable people have an answer.

It sounds like the receipt shows £4.50 more than it should, and you paid the amount shown on the receipt.
Is that right?
If so, then clearly you and the shop have agreed on the price and you have paid the price agreed.
Deal done.
If however, they deducted more from your card than is shown on your receipt, that is different.
In this case, they have made an obvious mistake and should rectify it.0 -

Yes, that is it. Although obviously I agreed the price on the item, not the barcode price. It's interesting that is the interpretation, given that you as the customer can't see the items as they are scanned in and have to rely on scrutinising the receipt before leaving.
That makes Tesco's policy a rather good one, doesn't it?0 -
Hmmm, if the barcode was incorrect - meaning that you were overcharged (£4.50 is not a small amount either!) - then that is Tesco's fault and they should reimburse you, surely?*Look for advice, not 'advise'*

I really don't think that's right in law. I'm not an expert but they have overcharged through a mistake of their own and if it was me that had been overcharged thus, I'd bl**dy well get the £4.50 back!
And they'll give vouchers 'less the postage'! Nice customer service!
Never go to Tescos myself if I can help it, ridiculously expensive and an annoying shop in general.*Look for advice, not 'advise'*

Ah, Tesco.
I thought Tesco had a policy of refunding 'double the difference' when an item scanned at a higher price than on the shelf edge label?0 -
have they overcharged or have they mispriced something on the shelf?0
-
It wasn't Tesco, I made a comparison that Tesco's policy for more than reimbursing a barcode overcharge is good, if wealdrom is correct in stating that a customer has no rights if the barcode doesn't match to the price stickered on the item.
When I spoke to the shop, they were annoyed that I wanted the £4.50 back! I would have thought that a card refund would be easy, but they say if I'm not present they can't. I'm surprised, given that I can purchase over the phone with it.0 -
...if wealdrom is correct in stating that a customer has no rights if the barcode doesn't match to the price stickered on the item.
I said... you and the shopkeeper appear to have agreed a price. You paid the price agreed.
The time to complain is at the till before leaving.
Will you be telling us next that the lower priced label on the shelf is no longer there?
In which case I think you may have difficulties.
All this mispricing stuff that you have now decided to tell us about was not in your original post.
Why won't you tell us the retailer?0 -
You are entitled on the difference as it was miss priced by the sound of it. If you want the amount refunding back to your card you will need to return to store. Most stores can't refund without the card present hence why the refund would be in vouchers via post.
If you had purchased over the phone it would be different but you haven't so what you can do over the phone isn't relevant.0
