Thanks for the replies, but I'm considering getting myself a Toyota Aygo. The insurance on that seems pretty cheap, along with the car tax (£20) and it has a good mpg

I checked out the cars that you guys gave me, but insurance costs, running costs and tax costs are higher than the Aygo. I do appreciate it, because otherwise I wouldn't have such a selection to choose from

The way I see it, I could sell the car in 2-3 years, and recoup most of my money, but I won't be able to recoup my insurance costs. Originally, I only wanted to spend up to £1000 on the car, but the insurance costs were too high ie: it seems that it's actually cheaper for me to get the Aygo

Sounds daft, but try a quote on a little van. They're quite often a lot cheaper.
Yes it's overwhelming, but what else can we do?

Thanks for the suggestion, but I'd rather not drive a little van. I wouldn't be hearing the end of it for years :)

I think the Aygo is pretty good for what it is, after doing some googling and the one I want has supposedly been kept by a lady owner as well, which is always good when buying a car ;)
  • Aygo is a good choice, my sister had a 107 for 3yrs and only changed as she wanted a fiat 500!

Have you done the pass plus thingy? Should help to bring the premium down a bit for you.
Maybe worth looking into the Institute of Advanced Motorists too?

The pass plus may not pay for itself though. Not many insurers actuall offer any discount for it.

And those that do drop it less than it costs to do anyway.

Damn. The car I wanted won't be insured, due to it being cat d

Seen another one, which is about £500 cheaper though (with more mileage on the clock), a year younger and not listed as being cat d either, with slightly higher insurance

Wouldn't mind doing it myself tbh, because I'm actually a bit scared of motorways :o and the council down at my uni offer a discount
  • sometimes adding a named driver (eg a parent) can actually reduce your premium.

Just go on ebay or autotrader, select cars 1.1 engine & under then if there's anything you like use the reg to get a quick quote.

Try around 10 vehicles & just see how you get on.

Unfortunately, my dad pushes my insurance up higher, due to having an accident (at fault) a while ago, and working in a high risk job. The doctors also won't allow my mum to drive, so I'm kinda stuck

The only saving grace I have, is that at uni I will be living on a drive and it's graded A in the insurance grouping, whereas my town is graded D

So that saves me a lot of money on insurance. Think I might just actually go for the Aygo, because of reduced insurance costs and apparently it doesn't depreciate as much as similar cars like the Peuegot 107 and the Citroen C1/C2 either, which is a plus

And it's a Japanese make which is pretty good

You keep spouting that, as previously pointed out Pass Plus reduces the premium on a year on year on basis, as an example if you save £100 on the premium the first year after two years that is £200, after three £300 which while possibly not paying for the course initially it does eventually and the saving continues each year.

According to the DSA at the moment there are thirteen companies offering a discount.
