Cheap, reliable, all rounder car to insure for 19 year old?

Hey all

Just passed my driving test today :j

and I was thinking about getting a car(insurance costs depending) and I was thinking of getting a car that has relatively good MPG, doesn't look like it could be mistaken as a girly car, and "cheap" to insure

I don't mind spending the extra money on the car, if the insurance is cheaper. I mean, I'd likely pay off the insurance in full, so that I don't have to pay any extra fees for paying monthly

I'm not too sure on what to get

I've had a look here:
http://www.adrianflux.co.uk/blog/2007/06/top-ten-cars-for-teens-cheapest-young.html

And I'm still not sure on what car to get. I mean I know it's not going to be any thing flashy of course

If it makes any difference,I'm 20 in about a month but I think car insurance companies discriminate people under the age of 21? It'd be nice if somehow the car insurance companies deem me to magically become more responsible as a 20 year old as opposed to a 19 year old

Cheap to insure, If your idea of cheap is £3000 or £4000 there will be plenty of choice.

What car depends on what you really need and what you really want. And if your willing to pay a premium for what you want rather than need.

    Budget?

Well, I was considering >£1000 for the car, and perhaps >£2000 for insurance. I don't mind spending more on the car, if insurance is cheaper. At the end of the day, I want the net amount to be cheaper, and not just the insurance

I'd register the car at my uni address where the place gets an A rating on postcode banding, and we live on a drive as well

Insurers are not as naive as you seem to think.

They aren't interested in the address you register the car at.

You have to tell them the address where it's kept at night!

I wasn't getting at that. If I get it, it will be staying at the university address, hence it makes sense to register it over there. If I was going to have a car at my home address, I'd register it over here.

I'm not wanting to deceive them. I mean a friend of mine contacted Aviva and they were fine with him changing the address on his policy to the university one, because that's where the car will remain for most of the time

I don't mind the blackbox sort of stuff that much, because I don't think Ill drive that much, if that would help with my premiums?

I mean eventually, I'd probably rather get some contractual insurance, but if PAYG is cheaper for at least the first year, why not - especially when I've no idea about how many miles I'd drive

You seem to think that you are insuring the car. You're not. You are insuring YOU to drive the car. As you are a new driver, you will be the biggest risk. Granted, where it is kept will affect the premium to some extent, but unfortunately your lack of experience and age will have the biggest impact on the premium. Therefore whether you get a Fiesta, a Clio or a Saxo for similar money, the biggest part of the premium is till going to be based on you.

I get what you're getting at,and that's why I mentioned my age earlier and that I only just passed, but surely some cars are deemed to be more "boy racer" type cars than other cars, hence the insurance goes up on those sorts of cars?

Agreed. There are cars you need to avoid. The GTI's, ZX's or anything with lots of letters after the name. You need to focus on the basic big standard vehicles. Avoid the top of the range models, the performance models etc.

Smaller car. Smaller engine. Smaller premium.

Bog standard model or budget special edition will give you an outside chance of an insurance premium below £3k.
  • Diesel 106/fiesta/clio/polo/lupo maybe? less bhp but more torque so nice to drive but lower powered.

Read through the young driver thread and contact a good motor broker - not Swinton's.

You will need to insure the vehicle at the address where you are living when you insure it, and then notify insurers when you change address. You presumably only live at the Uni address in term time and if you give that address now then that's where anything by post will be sent. Also how will you explain if you have an accident before you move to the Uni address?

I would also not get too focussed on car groups at this point - get some online quotes for say a fiesta diesel and see how much the premium is. If it is within your means then get a few quotes for different vehicles - use Parkers to get an indication of groupings.

Do all the other stuff like add an older experienced driver to the policy with a clean licence and no claims etc.

Regardless of you being prepared to pay £2k for cover, the price will be what the market wants to underwrite you.
