Read through the young driver thread and contact a good motor broker - not Swinton's.

You will need to insure the vehicle at the address where you are living when you insure it, and then notify insurers when you change address. You presumably only live at the Uni address in term time and if you give that address now then that's where anything by post will be sent. Also how will you explain if you have an accident before you move to the Uni address?
Yes, but that covers around 9 months or so lol, so that's quite a long time. I'll take your advice and only get it (if I do get it) whilst at uni

I would also not get too focussed on car groups at this point - get some online quotes for say a fiesta diesel and see how much the premium is. If it is within your means then get a few quotes for different vehicles - use Parkers to get an indication of groupings.

Do all the other stuff like add an older experienced driver to the policy with a clean licence and no claims etc.

Regardless of you being prepared to pay £2k for cover, the price will be what the market wants to underwrite you.

    I was considering this:

and I was told that the mileage is too high  The insurance comes to £1678.59, and that's without adding another driver etc..

    EDIT: What about this car?

Insurance: £1800.91 via insure the box, or £2171.26 via hastings direct. Ill have a look at Ford Fiestas in a bit, I suppose

Insurers are not as naive as you seem to think.

They aren't interested in the address you register the car at.

You have to tell them the address where it's kept at night!

Why is your post identical to Quentin's above? Are you a spammer building up until you can post links?

I passed my test last year (i was 26).
I went on ebay and auto trader and got number plates and put them in moneysupermarket to get the lowest quotes.
I found that the more i spent on the car, the lower the insurance was - they generally come out the same price (ie what you saved on the insurance you spent on the car) but id rather have a nicer, newer car and spend less on the insurance.

One other thing i found was that there was 1 company coming out far cheaper than everyone else (LV) but only for certain cars, if i bought a 56 plate it was about £400 less in insurance than a 55 plate.

I know that doesnt help with a specific car, but i think your best investing a morning or afternoon into it.

We bought a polo for my DD -older but well kept with hardly any miles. I searched hundreds of cars insurance before I settled for this. Rather than above I found the older cheaper the car the less the insurance and that was the advice we got from a broker. Buy a cheap car build up no claims then move on in a couple of years. The 1L made a massive differnce but then 1L might be too slow for you!

The 107 was also super cheap.

We got a sale quote from Direct Line and it was really good compared to all the various comparison sites.

107/C1 were both cheap for me too - theyre both the same car underneath along with a toyota aygo i think.

I ended up with a 1ltr Corsa. We disagree on age but it looks like 1ltrs are the way forward....unless your going up a hill :-P

I love my little car, i was never interested in driving, only passed for my job but its done a 160 mile trip and back again only stopping once each time for a mcdonalds with no trouble at all.

It does struggle when going up hills and motorway ramps in anything above 3rd if you have 3 or 4 lads in it.

My daughter (19) found that the cheapest car to insure was a 25 year old Volvo estate with a 2.3 litre engine, presumably because the statistics show hardly any 19 year olds drive cars like that so they have an excellent claims record.
Unfortunately she hated driving it :)

I had a clio, a J reg one, it was about £600 to insure but I was a bit older than you and I am female. Fiestas, puntos, Kas, anything small and not too unusual as the cost of replacement parts in event of an accident may push the premium up. You need to factor in other running costs such as fuel and tax, as you will be a student and will be looking to keep these low. Insurance will hopefully remain static or decrease, fuel and tax are only going one way unfortunately.

So probably not an MR2 or Focus Cosworth just yet...
