    BTW, further to the above, if anyone is thinking 'no point at your age, you're going to die soon anyway', it is fact that Her Majesty now sends out far more 100 year old birthday congratulation cards than she did at the start of her reign 60 years ago. A person of 79 can easily live at least another 10 years and maybe a lot more. It's more pleasant to live longer in improved health, being able to breathe more easily, move around more easily, all the rest which comes with lower weight and improved nutrition. If I only have ONE more day to live, it's still worth it.

  • After reading through 20+ pages I've decided to give this a go. Thanks for all your inspirational posts. :T

    As it happens I haven't eaten since 9pm last night anyway, so today may as well be my first 'fasting' day.

    I had a work healthcheck last week and I currently weigh 11st 9lb, which is the very top end of normal for my height, but am carrying 34% body fat. This fact appalls me and so I'd like to shed some of it as well as improve my long term health prospects.

    My main issue is carb cravings, due to a busy job I quite often don't eat much/at all all day only to stuff myself with unhealthy food at night/weekends. So for me it won't be the fasting, but what I eat after I break the fast which will be my main challenge.

    I think I'll make a salad with some king prawns this evening. The key to this for me may well be in meal planning.

    Wow! Thank you Margaretclare, I have just eaten two eggs. I'm making today my first fasting day. I rather foolishly had a coffee with cream this morning with a friend but today's calories will amount to 527, I do intend to eat healthily. I do not intend to pop off yet!! :)

    Another small point is: make sure you get enough fluids. Many older people do not drink enough. As I said, DH and I like to keep well-hydrated.

    I couldn't go without breakfast either, and I used to work in that kind of environment too. The word 'break-fast' itself means what it says - the body has been fasting overnight, for several hours, and needs replenishing. Children who go to school without breakfast (and there are many) tend to be sleepy, don't concentrate well, even memory is affected.

    We've just had half a grapefruit, a boiled egg, a slice of wholemeal toast. We're having smoked cod for lunch and then I thought about making a pan of veg soup. Not many calories in home-made veg soup and it does keep you feeling fuller for longer.

    I do wish people would stop referring to this lifestyle as a DIET!!! :wall:

    DIET'S DO NOT WORK as they imply a temporary change in order to reach a goal which is ultimately undone once a person goes back to their old ways. One can only sustain a healthy weight through a permanent lifestyle change :D

    A change in diet is a change in lifestyle.

    I couldn't go without breakfast either, and I used to work in that kind of environment too.     I think it depends on the individual. For the last thirty years, I have rarely eaten breakfast or lunch. On occasions when I do eat breakfast, I find that I am ravenous by about 11am.

    I find all these comments about people's age very patronising. Regardless of age any sensible person knows that if they have medical problems they should check with their GP before any sort of restrictive diet.

    I have an aunt who is 86, very fashion conscious, keeps up with the latest trends, has an Ipad, tweets, skypes, etc and is reasonably fit. She diets because she wants to look good for herself and has more will power than I have.

    Scientists say that we all eat too much so I can't see that 500 calories twice a week would do anyone any harm unless they are diabetic.
