    Mrs G must be tiny!

    She's 5' 6" and 8st 4-7 lbs and in good shape physically.
My BMR is 1594 with a total calories of 2192 to maintain my (over) weight.

    I'm 6' 4" 14st and my maintenance intake is only 2300.

At least, it is according to the calculator on this site...

Many thanks for the link, I was aware of the website but hadn't seen the video. It is exactly the way I eat and exercise, and obviously a growing band of tens of thousands of other people agree.

He does have science behind him, glowing testimonials from thousands of people, and evidence from real athletes/sportspeople that performance is not affected by low carb eating once they are adapted. (I wish some people could get to grips and believe this concept!)

He sums it up near the end when he goes through what he eats - and it's exactly what I have found - 'paleo' eating - which to me is just healthy eating - doesn't make you hungry and you eat less anyway. Considering the amount of bread and cereal and biscuits I used to consume, it's incredible to look back at the volume of food, compared to now - most of my kitchen cupboards are now empty.

So, getting back to fasting matters.......if a paleo diet was followed first, not only would people loose weight anyway, it is also a better platform to go from if fasting is being considered for health reasons. It is going to be more difficult - and not sustainable - for those people who do eat processed foods, bread, grains, sugar-based products, fizzy drinks etc, as the cravings (and their side-effects) will still be there.

    Great post Murphy!

These days, I am finding myself going into the supermarket and realising that 80-90% of what they sell is now completely irrelevant to my lifestyle. There are aisles upon aisles of processed and junk food, with very little in the way of fresh, natural products!

I found the BMR thing very interesting as it does show that everybody has different needs and you really can't tell if somebody is under or over eating without first knowing their weight, height or lifestyle etc.

How active are you though? And don't forget that your age plays a part too.

I just did the calculation, and it worked out that I need around 2215 calories per day to maintain. This is more than you and I am certainly not overweight (not anymore anyway). I tend to go by measurements more - currently my waist is that of a size 8, but my hips are a 10.

I'm 5 ft 7 and about 9st 13lbs currently. With my age, my BMR is 1429.5. Based on my current activity levels, I multiplied that by 1.55 which gave the total of 2215.

So, if I was to aim for further weight loss, i'd be looking at around 1882 calories per day.

Yes, exactly. Although supermarkets are convenient, what they have done (amongst many other bad things) is sell convenience foods. They say they only sell what people want, yet if they only sold fruit, veg, meat, fish, dairy and other peripheral goodies, that that's what people would eat. (That's very simplistic - and idealistic - I know!) But they don't make any money from fruit & veg etc, so positive changes will never happen in a million years. Never mind people's health, there's too much money to be made!!

(I do appreciate we are deviating from the thread, sorry :o)

And build.......There are 'slight' people with thin frames and 'heavy set' people.

Take Sir Chris Hoy for example 14.5st, 6ft 2", he's a big chap but obviously as fit as a very fit butchers dog. My husband is 6ft 2" and 14.5st would be 3/4st overweight for him. I'm 5ft 7" and would never get to a size 8 - my ankles are huge!

Female 40yrs old, 83kg, I look and feel slim at 70kg so have a fair amount to lose, I multiplied my BMR by 1.375 which is exercise 1-3 times a week which I do, I get about by walking or cycling including to work and back every day which is a round trip of about five miles. i never catch buses as I can't bear to part with the money when my legs work just as well!

I think if I was 8 stone something like Mr Gs wife I would look poorly and emaciated if I could even physically manage it.

I'm actually quite surprised that my waist has got to that size, and I don't expect me to lose much more weight, or shrink that much more in size. There isn't a lot of fat left to come off in that area - maybe an inch from each hip, but that's it, so I'll never look 'tiny' as some people do, but I'm perfectly happy with that. I think if I ever aimed for that silly 'size zero' that became so popular at one point, I'd have to make myself seriously ill to achieve it! But, there is another girl in the office with a tiny frame, she's probably at that size naturally - she eats plenty, and healthily, she just naturally has a smaller frame.

My calves don't ever seem to get any smaller! lol They are quite muscly though.
